JAMES (JIM) CLEVEN

On August 12, 2020, James (Jim) Harald Cleven passed away at the age of 78.
He is survived by his wife Colleen, daughter Jacqueline (Jason) Oltrop, granddaughter Greta, daughter Catherine Cleven, and sister Susan. He was predeceased by his parents, Mary and Harald (Harry) Cleven and his brother Jeffrey.
Jim was born and raised in Winnipeg and spent his childhood summers as a keen camper at the YMCA Camp Stephens on Lake of the Woods. In his young adult years, he continued as a camp counsellor and was known for his elaborate and humourous ghost stories. In 1964 he graduated from the University of Manitoba and began a lengthy career in sales. Jim was the life of the party and had a smile that lit up the room. He enjoyed playing piano at gatherings and his time as a member at the Winnipeg Canoe Club. Just like his brother Jeff, Jim loved his boat and the peacefulness of being out on the water.
As per Jim's wishes, no service will be held.
The family would like to thank the staff at Riverview Palliative Care Centre for their compassionate care.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • I remember Jim as a happy go lucky kid that lived on Kingston Crescent and went to Windsor School with me. Condolences to his family. - Posted by: Jocelyn Burgess Barnard (Childhood friend) on: Aug 25, 2020

  • Jim had a ready smile, a quick wit, and an uncanny skill for closing sales. I’ve carried and frequently quoted a number of his expressions throughout my adult life. For example: * What is the true meaning of the word “no”? It’s a request for further information - a deferred “yes”. * Never allow a sales prospect to choose between “Plan A” and “no”. Focus their attention on “Plan A vs Plan B”. * On undesired weight gain. “Now there’s more of me to love!” RIP Jim..... You deserve it. - Posted by: Ted Glover (Childhood Friend) on: Aug 22, 2020

  • Colleen, Jacqueline, Catherine and families. Sorry to hear of your loss. Jim’s smile always lit up a room. May the good memories give you peace. Marjorie - Posted by: Marjorie Dawson (Friend) on: Aug 22, 2020

  • I was a friend of Jim’s at the Winnipeg Canoe Club. I remember many good times with Jim playing the piano. I was a friend of Jim and Coleens for many years. He will be missed by his family and friends. Thanks Jim, for the memories. - Posted by: Lynn Greaves (Brockie) (Friend) on: Aug 22, 2020
