MORRIS SMITH

It is with a deep sadness that we announce the passing of Morris "Moe" Smith on Thursday, July 30, 2020, at the Selkirk Regional Health Centre.
Morris is survived by his wife Diane, brothers, Howard (Gwen) and Walter (Joan), sisters, Sadie Owen and Violet Buzan, sister-in-law Marilyn Mcneil and many nieces and nephews. Morris was predeceased by his mother and father, Howard and Jean Smith, brother Wilfred, sister Gladys and in-laws, Bernice Smith, Bill Buzan, Ira Owen, Ted Benson, June Stasiuk and Larry Mcneil.
Born in Winnipeg in 1940, Morris was a proud "north-ender". He attended Strathcona, Robertson, Margaret Scott and Isaac Newton schools. His work life began at an early age, delivering movies to small town movie houses in rural areas of Manitoba and NW Ontario. He loved to recount those days about his adventures on the road. The majority of his working days were spent at Eaton's as a Stationary Engineer. Lastly, Moe retired from Standard Tube after leaving Eaton's. Always ready to work, you could count on him to be there well before his official start time. Morris was retired for 20 years; he and Diane spent those retirement years relaxing and socializing at their home in the Interlake.
As the years passed by, Morris became a homebody. He loved his baseball and was a staunch fan of the Blue Jays. On many occasions, time with family and friends was scheduled around the timing of the Blue Jay games. He often travelled the road to Winnipeg to enjoy lunch "with the boys" where some stimulating conversations took place. He also enjoyed football and was a fan of the Blue Bombers. He had a sharp memory and could rattle off many stories - often unchallenged - on any number of plays, players or coaches, whether past or present. He was not shy to bet with friends on his favourite teams and he was always quick to look for any winnings that would come his way.
As his health began to deteriorate from the dreaded disease of cancer, Morris displayed courage in those times of adversity.
To those who wish to honour his memory, a donation to CancerCare Manitoba or to Winnipeg Pet Rescue is welcome.
Cremation has taken place and no service will be held.

Morris will live on in the memories of the people whose lives he touched.

  • So sorry to hear of Moe’s passing and my condolences go out to all of his family. I met Moe through our Tuesday group lunches at the Sals on Leila. He always had some comment and opinion on the current events of the day as well as a wry sense of humour. Many times he often got in the last word. He enjoyed sports talk, his beloved Blue Jays and sharing information on his friends, politicians and athletes from his “North End” roots. Moe will be missed by all who knew him. - Posted by: Bruce Unfried (Friend) on: Aug 24, 2020

  • Our sympathies to Diane and family. So sorry to hear about Morris. Sorry we haven't kept in touch since you moved from Matlock. We enjoyed the get togethers there when you lived down the street. Hearing the stories was really a treat. - Posted by: Susan Gulenchyn and Bernie Gulenchyn (neighbors) on: Aug 24, 2020

  • My sincerest condolences to my Aunt Diane. Although its been years that we have seen one another you both were very active in my life as a young girl, teenager and young adult. Uncle Morris, was always telling jokes, he was the life of any party. My fondest memory would be family gatherings, where as a young girl he would call me over, tell me a funny joke, or story, or we would poke fun at my dad and pretend we were talking about him to make him laugh. I would often spend the night just in December as I would love to decorate the Christmas tree. I have many fond memories. May he rest in peace. - Posted by: Jodi McNeil (Neice) on: Aug 23, 2020
