RUTH LILLIAN HERGESHEIMER

Peacefully after a lengthy illness, Ruth Hergesheimer passed away at the Riverview Health Centre on August 31, 2020 at the age of 88 years.
Ruth is survived by her daughter Cathy (Grant); sons, Wally (Susan) and David (Sheryl); grandchildren, Jenna (Andrew), Kelsey (Craig), Carlin (Kevin), Brittany (Eric), Lindsay and Jessica and great-grandchildren, Gavin, Evelyn, Brooklyn, Keyan, Blakely, Madelyn, Mason, Marley and Remi.
Mom was predeceased by her beloved husband Wally in 2014; parents, Charles and Kathryn Appler (Kreutzer); sisters, Adeline and Florence and nephew Greg.
In 1953, Mom met the love of her life and married Dad on July 3, 1954, in Winnipeg. During the next 60 years, they shared a life filled with much love and plenty of good times and laughter.
As a result of dad's successful hockey career, mom had the opportunity to travel extensively, as well as live in New York, Chicago, Buffalo and Calgary. During this time, Mom was introduced to many people and made lifelong friends.
While her children were growing up and attending school, mom worked for the City of Winnipeg at the River East Arena. She very much enjoyed her job, as this was her chance to meet people and socialize outside of her home.
When dad suddenly passed away in 2014, Mom showed such strength and courage which we were all so accustom to seeing. While her heart was broken, she knew that ahead, life would offer her the chance to celebrate weddings, university graduations, work promotions, milestone birthdays, retirements and the birth of more great-grandchildren.
After Dad's passing, mom continued to attend Grace Lutheran Church, a place where her and Dad attended for many years, as church and her faith were very important.
Mom was a strong and compassionate woman, who battled cancer on two separate occasions. Dad would take Mom for cancer treatments, and while many would go home after to rest, Mom would insist that Dad take her to Polo Park shopping centre where they spent the afternoon. While cancer would eventually take her life, she battled hard with dignity and enjoyed life the best way she could.
There was nothing more important to mom than family. Mom and dad were very proud of all of us and they continually reminded us of that. They showed us the importance and need to have a supportive, loving, kind and generous home. Growing up, we experienced all of these things, including the need to share a laugh. Mom welcomed into the family with much love her son-in-law Grant and daughter-in-laws, Susan and Sheryl. They soon became aware of moms need to continually feed all of us, as every meal included extra helpings of food even when none was requested.
Mom very much enjoyed spending time with her growing family. Some of her fondest memories were her numerous trips to Calgary, her stays at the cottage at the Whiteshell, and the many trips to Fargo for shopping sprees. She enjoyed numerous family dinners at her home or the homes of her children, as these were special times that she shared with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mom's generosity was always shown, and she very much enjoyed giving gifts to her family to celebrate the many milestones.
Mom we will miss you, your warm smile and your loving hugs. We will be forever grateful for the life you gave us, and the loving home you and Dad provided.

You are now at peace and free of all pain.
"Until we meet again."

Thank you to the palliative staff at the St. Boniface Hospital, Riverview Health Centre and CancerCare Manitoba for the compassion and dignity that you have shown our Mother and Grandmother.
In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made in her memory to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9.
In compliance with Covid-19 restrictions, regrettably attendance is limited to invitation only.

  • My heartfelt sympathies to the family. I had the pleasure of getting to know “Ruthie” during her stay on 8A while she was at St. Boniface Hospital. She was a beautiful person and her family was everything to her. I have thought of her often over the last several months, she made quite an impact on me in such a short time frame. Her family is just as lovely as she was. You have so many precious memories that will help to carry you through this difficult time.
