ELEANOR JEAN MATHEWS
1933-2020

It is with great sadness that we announce that our mother, Eleanor Mathews, passed on September 5, leaving her family after being diagnosed with cancer in January 2020.
We believe that she is now with her loving husband Ken (pre-deceased 2002) and they will be together again in eternity. She leaves behind her children, Tracy (Lionel), Matthew (Marian), and Maria (Mike), step-daughters, Janice and Diane and their children (Rob, Emma, Roseanna, Evan, Laura) and grandchildren, Taylor (Brianna), Cydney (Michael), Nicholas, Morgan (Lem) and Deidre, as well as, great-grandchildren, Avery and Isla. She was pre-deceased by her two brothers, Gordon and David.
Eleanor Jean Murchison was born at home where the family homestead was located on the Northumberland Strait at Mount Buchanan, PEI in 1933. She spent her early years there before the family moved to Baie Comeau, Quebec. Even though she grew up in northern Quebec, she would return to spend summers at her Pappy's place whose land was part of the original PEI Selkirk Settler's land acquisition in 1803. She had many fond memories of PEI and loved her Pappy dearly.
We were blessed to have the best mother in the whole world, who dedicated her life to her husband Ken and to her children. As a young woman she moved to Hamilton, Ontario to work, and eventually found herself working for the Arthur Murray Dance School, where Dad took one look at her and knew he was not going to let her go. They married and moved a lot in the early years through the United States and Canada, but home was back in Winnipeg for Dad and Mom happily followed him to take care of the home and the children while he grew the business.
Their love story was remarkable, and they were each other's best friend. When they finally retired all business concerns, they moved to the lake at Lac Du Bonnet chasing grandkids and providing quality family time for everyone.
After Dad passed, Mom eventually moved back to Winnipeg. She remained very active, often shaming those younger with how fit she was, and how much stamina she had. She used to bike hundreds of kilometres a week, until she had a biking accident, and received a titanium elbow at age 79. After that, she would walk long distances with younger girlfriends and her children, but when the weather was bad, she would stair climb in her building to get her steps in for the day.
Mom was well travelled in later years - Alaska, Cuba, Hawaii, Italy, Mexico and back to her childhood home in PEI. She was an active volunteer for several years for the Alzheimer's Society and for the Assiniboine Park Zoo where she loved talking to the animals.
Mom's lifelong friends included Beverly (Wills) Robertson from Baie Comeau, Peggy McFarland from Hamilton, cousin Alan Ross from PEI and her brother Gordon's wife Nancy. Sylvia Eagleton was her dear friend from the days of raising their families on Kingston Crescent and Janet Fost and Sharon Matthews were good friends from her apartment block for many years. All continued to stay in touch even as lives went in different directions. Mom said that friends were important and so we wanted to recognize them on her behalf.
The family would like to thank the wonderful care providers at CancerCare, St. Boniface Palliative Care Unit and the Grace Hospice for their dedication and support as we navigated Mom's final weeks.
In lieu of flowers, Mom would be pleased to know that donations were made to The Assiniboine Park Zoo animal programs or to The Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.
As per Mom's wishes there will be no formal service and a private family event will be held at a future date.

  • Dear Tracy, Matt, Maria and family. I have many happy memories of time spent at the Mathews house on Kingston Crescent. Your mom was always so elegant, even when she was sitting in the living room with pretty slippers on watching your COLOUR TV (we only had B&W, so I was quite envious of that!). She and your dad always had a welcoming smile for the neighbourhood kids, and took an interest in who we were and what we were doing. I can remember sitting at the kitchen counter while your mom served us drinks and cookies and Babe the dog drooled below us hoping for a few crumbs. I also remember that she was one of the few moms who would drive her kids to school on a cold winter morning - she always was kind enough to fit a few extra bodies into the station wagon when she could. It was clear to me, even at a young age, that her family were the most important people to her. What a gift that you experienced her as the best mom in the world. Sending love to you all as you adjust to life without her physical presence. - Posted by: Anne (Shackell) Carroll (Friend) on: Sep 12, 2020

  • Dear Tracy, Matt, Maria And family - I have many happy memories of time spent at your house on Kingston Crescent. Your mom had a beautiful, welcoming smile for all us kids. She was always so elegant, even when she was sitting in the living room with pretty slippers watching your COLOUR TV! (I was jealous of that - we only had B&W!). She would give us a drink or a cookie at the kitchen bar while Babe the St. Bernard would drool at our feet trying to catch a crumb. She was also one of the moms who would drive her kids to school on a cold winter morning, and generously picked up as many others as she could fit in her station wagon. Both your parents were kind to the neighborhood kids and took the time to talk and show some interest in us. It was clear though, that you three were the most important ones to her. How wonderful that you experienced her as the best mom in the world, and what a lovely example that set for you all. This thing called life is an amazing gift, but it has moments like this that are so hard. Sending love to you all as you adjust to life without the physical presence of your dear mom. - Posted by: Anne (Shackell) Carroll (Friend) on: Sep 12, 2020
