SHIRLEY JOAN JOHNSTON
(nee BLIGH)
May 6, 1930 - September 13, 2020

It is with great sadness that the family of Shirley Joan Johnston (nee Bligh) announce her passing on September 13, 2020, at Golden West Centennial Lodge, Winnipeg, at the age of 90.
Shirley was predeceased by her husband Ian (2009); her parents, Cyril James and Katherine Bligh (nee Neufeld); and her sister Audrey (late Robert) Bestvater. Her strong presence will be deeply missed by her children, Bruce, Colin (Pam), and Maureen (Tony) Hlady; daughter-in-law Brenda; grandchildren, Garrett, Kevin and Courtney, and many other family members and friends.
Shirley was born and raised in Transcona and after graduating from Central School, receiving the Governor General's Award, she pursued her education as a nurse at St. Boniface School of Nursing, class of 1953. Her career took her to New York for a short period in 1954 for additional study and then she returned to Winnipeg where she met Ian, marrying in 1957 and raising their family. She completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1971 at the University of Winnipeg, enabling her to move forward into her career of teaching at the St. Boniface School of Nursing. Shirley retired in 1992 after a long career of nursing and teaching at St. Boniface Hospital. She and Ian enjoyed travelling during their retirement as they worked on their golf game and spent precious time with family. She continued to be involved in her community serving on the board of Kirkfield Park United Church and the Manitoba Society of Seniors for many years.
Gratitude is extended to the staff at Golden West Centennial Lodge for the care and attention she received in her final years.
In lieu of flowers, a donation in her name to the Heart & Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.
A short service will be held at Glen Eden Funeral Home on Saturday, September 19 at 10:00 a.m. to honour her life.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • I had the honour and privilege of studying nursing under the kind, caring, considerate, generous, gentle and happy-go-lucky tutelage of beautiful Shirley Johnston. As a very young and apprehensive student, she went above and beyond to guide us through procedures that we were unsure of or frankly, scared stiff of getting wrong. Her gentle demeanor was balanced with her strength of character, her work ethic and her compassion and empathy towards both patients/residents and students alike. As a teenager far from home, she always reminded me so much of my Mom with her gentle and reassuring presence and her beautiful smile. She was a true gift to medicine and to humanity and will be forever remembered and missed by those of us she trained, educated, supported and cared for. May the angels wrap you in the loving arms you so richly deserve, dearest Shirley. You have earned your rest... - Posted by: Pauline Gauthier (Nursing Student Class of 1991) on: Apr 11, 2023

  • She was one of the best and nicest Instructors at SBGH school of nursing. She was so gentle and had the greatest smile. My sincere condolences to family and friends of Shirley. đź’ś - Posted by: Clare Sanheim (Nursing student ) on: Sep 18, 2020

  • My deepest condolences to Maureen, Colin and Bruce along with their families. I treasure the memories and will never forget Shirley's smile when she walked into the room. Thank you for teaching Dick and I bridge and having the patience of putting up with us on those many Friday nights on Wordsworth Way. - Posted by: Connie Michael (Friend of the family) on: Sep 17, 2020

  • Shirley was a wonderful compliment to the staff @ St. Boniface School of Nursing! Kind, helpful, & always available to talk to students ... we all had days we felt “frazzled” ... some of us even considered “packing it in.” She always had time for us. A real “gem”..... sincere condolences to her entire family. - Posted by: Vivian Shipper, R.N. (nee Lozinski) (Student @ St. Boniface, graduated 1977) on: Sep 17, 2020
