HERBERT THEODORE CALVERLEY
August 9, 1924
- September 27, 2020

It is with the greatest of sorrow and tender memories that we announce the passing of our husband and father, Herbert Theodore Calverley, on Sunday, September 27 2020, having lived an extraordinary 96 years. We were all there throughout his final days... the girl he married, me the light of his life he said... and our two daughters, Cheryl and Debbie and their husbands, Terry and Dave.
HT was a wonderful husband and father. He was kind and generous, loyal and true, a man of integrity with a boyish zest for living. He loved sunshine and sunsets, blue skies, and all of nature; Delta, golf, his blue Olds, birds and jazz. He sang in the morning, he sang at noon, and he sang at night. It was not unusual to hear Lazy River, Stormy Weather, Rambling Rose, My Way, New York New York, Mack the Knife, Fly Me To the Moon, and his all time favourite What a Wonderful World by "Satchmo" Louis Armstrong. But most of all he loved his three girls with all his heart.
Herb was born in Poplar Point, Manitoba, son of Jean and Edgar Calverley. He was surrounded by his five brothers: Earl, Arnold, Keith, Russell and Cecil. His brothers meant everything to him, and the love and friendship for each other remained throughout their lives. The many trips back to 'the old farm' was a constant in their memories.
His early years were spent on that farm at Poplar Point, and it was at a local dance that he met me, the girl he would marry. I was on stage at the piano with a local band, while he danced the night away in those two-toned shoes. That was the start of a long romance lasting 69 years.
There was some farming, a move from Portage la Prairie to Winnipeg with Imperial Oil and a new home in Woodhaven and a life lived "happily ever after' with our two daughters, Cheryl and Debbie. Herb loved his days off when he could be with his family, always his first priority, or a round of golf, and enjoying his home. There was much love and admiration for this Uncle Herb on both sides of the family and he cherished the many calls and visits right up to his final days.
On August 9, 2020, Herb celebrated his 96th birthday, a life well lived, a man much admired. He was a good friend and a good neighbour. A message from his next door neighbour said it all ... "You are more than a neighbour or a friend. You are an inspiration to us all and we thank you."
Man of my dreams and a loving dad, he was tops in our hearts and his spirit will live on in our hearts and in our memories forever.
A private family service was held.

Condolences & Memories (9 entries)

  • So many memories, a life time of memories for the Gibb family. I was so sorry to hear of Mr. C's passing. A crazy memory popped into my head from a week at Delta Beach. Mr. C loved pepper on his eggs so I started putting pepper on my eggs. Hugs to all of you and prayers for comfort. You were blessed to have called him Dad and husband. • While Sid and I are heartbroken at the passing of dear Uncle Herbie (aka Uncle Hoop), we are forever grateful for his presence and loving influence. He was a rare and special man. Unfailingly kind, wise and supportive, he was quick to laugh, to express empathy, and to share family insights and stories, all of which gave us invaluable comfort as well as insight into who we are as a family. He was our hero; Sid and I will miss him greatly. Our love and condolence to his beloved wife Auntie Helen, and our cousins Cheryl and Debbie, along with their husbands Terry and Dave. Godspeed, Uncle Herb - we love you. - Posted by: Ann Calverley and Sid Shugarman (Niece and nephew-in-law) on: Oct 03, 2020
