OLGA SYROTA
(nee REPESHKA)
December 1, 1922 - September 25, 2020
Olga will be lovingly remembered by daughter Eugenia (Jean) (Michael) Zushman; grandsons, Michael; Kenneth (Dora); great-grandson Aidan; special daughter Sandra (UK); nieces, nephews and friends, Yeni G. and Carolyn K.
She was predeceased by her husband Peter (2002), father Dmytro Repeshka (1976), mother Katherina Tanchak (1959) and brother Michael (1992).
Olga was born in St. Claude and at the age of four the family moved to LaSalle. She had a Grade 8 education because to quote her, "my father felt that women didn't need an education to cook, clean and keep house". She regretted that she wasn't able to further her education.
She married Peter Syrota on February 8, 1941. She couldn't get a ride to Winnipeg for her wedding so she walked from LaSalle. Unfortunately no one from her family could attend. She was forever grateful to her sister-in-law Mary who helped with the wedding. Peter and Olga built a house on land a mile south of St. Norbert and began market gardening.
Olga was an excellent seamstress. Her work experiences were varied: market gardening; piecework sewing at home then at the clothing factory; Eaton's mail order; T & T Seeds; nursing home cook's helper and 20 years lab assistant, Microbiology, University of Manitoba retiring in 1988. At age 55, she had breast cancer and was a 42-year survivor.
Her hobbies upon retirement were varied: crafts which she gifted or sold; bingo; cards; crosswords and puzzles. She was a charter member (1981) of the Ladies Auxiliary FOE #3870 and Retired Eagles Activity Club. She and Lydia began the Children's Christmas Shopping Spree which continues today. She had a great sense of humour and volunteered where needed, including playing parts in Halloween social skits.
The family extends thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff on 3E. Special thanks to the aides who do a remarkable job.
Due to the Corona virus, a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
If friends so desire, donations may be made to a charity of their choice.
