Peacefully, on September 24, 2020, at home, Betty passed away at the age of 91 years.
Betty was born on July 6, 1929, and was raised in Winnipeg, the youngest of three children born to Jean Kennedy (neé Noble) and Robert Douglass Laing.
She is survived by nephews and nieces, and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
Following her graduation from United College, Betty took a secretarial course, which initially led to work with a law firm, but then she realized that travelling and seeing the world was probably just as important for a young 20-year-old. Betty moved to Toronto as her first destination, then west to Calgary, and on to Vancouver. Reality set in, and Betty decided to pursue a career in Winnipeg. She first worked for the federal government for six years, then began a long-term career with the provincial government in Tourism Manitoba.
Betty never let an opportunity to travel and experience the world slip by. She visited many countries, among them, Israel, Egypt, Greece, China, England, Scotland, Ireland, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and the USA.
Betty was very active at the YWCA, then the Reh-Fit Centre, and she maintained a strong network of friends with whom she shared a passion for dining and good times, particularly with "the girls". She enjoyed her cottage at the beach. She volunteered at the Red Cross and at the Salvation Army, and supported Heritage Winnipeg.
Betty was an avid concert-goer, and in addition to her volunteer work and passion for the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, she enjoyed the Manitoba Opera, and was a regular patron of the Manitoba Theatre Centre.
Following her retirement, Betty continued her busy life, supplementing her thirst for knowledge and travel with courses at the University of Winnipeg.
Betty will be fondly remembered as a wonderful, kind, and helpful person.

Betty was one of my most favorite people over the last few years that I had the pleasure to know her. We shared a love for Victoria beach bakery items and long chats on the phone to discuss whatever Betty wanted to! I will miss her stories and easy going nature. Much love to her extended family. - Posted by: Janine (Physiotherapist ) on: Oct 27, 2020
