On August 4, 2015, Gertrude (Gertie) Habinski (nee Poitras) passed away peacefully at the Atikokan General Hospital at the age of 87.
Gertie moved to Atikokan in 1948 and was employed in the cookery at Steep Rock Iron Mines. It was there that she met Stanley Habinski and they married in 1954. They spent many years together and enjoyed the outdoors which included fishing, hunting and gardening. They were both avid bowlers.
Stan passed away on her December 31, 1999 and Gertie remained in their lifelong resident on Hancock Boulevard until her passing.
Gertie was also predeceased by her parents Arthur and Eliza Poitras of Woodridge, Manitoba.
She is survived by her sisters Terri Beach and Cyria Lawn (Peter), brother Richard Poitras (Cathy), as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
If so desired, donations in her memory may be made to the Extended Care Facility of the Atikokan General Hospital or the Canadian Cancer Society.
In honouring Gertie’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be held at the Woodridge Community Club on October 17th at 2 PM. Her ashes will be placed next to her husband Stan Habinksi in the Woodridge cemetery.
