HERBERT HANBIDGE BARBER

At the age of 98, Herbert Hanbidge Barber entered the presence of his Lord, early Saturday morning, October 24, 2020.
Born in 1922, and raised on a farm near Owen Sound, ON, Dad graduated from the University of Toronto and entered pastoral ministry. He married Elizabeth (nee Haynes) on his 23rd birthday. Dad pastored in Elmira, ON (1945-1948), Regina, SK (1948-1953) and at Calvary Temple, Winnipeg (1953-1997).
"Pastor H. H. Barber" became a familiar voice over many radio stations and a familiar face through his TV programs including Faith To Live By which he started in 1962 and hosted for 58 years. Among his numerous other accomplishments, Dad founded Calvary Temple Youth Camp and Calvary Place Personal Care Home. His life verse was Galatians 6:14 "But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world."
Dad is survived by his wife of 75 years, Margaret Elizabeth (or Betty), sons, Lorne (Illa), John (Karin), and Jim (Charlene), daughters, Lynda (Thor) and Sharie (Wayne), nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A private interment was held on October 28 at Elmwood Cemetery, Winnipeg.

Condolences & Memories (21 entries)

  • As I listen to FTLB again I am grateful for his mentoring while we both served churches in downtown Winnipeg. Loved his candour and sly humour. - Posted by: Daryl Busby (Fellow pastor) on: Feb 14, 2021

  • Mom and Dad and I went to Calvary Temple to listen to Pastor Barber's sermon on Mother's Day in 1986. His message was so wonderful, that Mom cried. I went forward to meet him afterwards, and was impressed by his simple humility. Four years later, Pastor Barber prayed with me to re-dedicate my life to Christ in 1990. He had just preached a great & thunderous sermon, and when I approached him afterwards in the prayer room to request prayer, he humbly got down on his knees next to me and prayed. Not standing over me or anything, like some. Down on his knees next to me before God! He baptised me some weeks after. Thank you Lord, for bringing such men into our lives. - Posted by: Christopher Jones (Attendee) on: Jan 20, 2021

  • I first attended Calvary Temple with my uncle 1972 in the Old Building. I sensed from that first visit a Spiritual Atmosphere more exalted than anything previously experienced. Especially the Tongues and Interpretation and of course Pastor Barber's Preaching. On May 18th 1994, while reading a NT David Rose gave to me. James 5:13 landed in my brain directly from heaven described in Psalm 147:15. The next day May 19th I went to CT. Pastor Barber came down from the Altar and anointed me exactly as stated in James 5:13. Immediately the Holy Spirit snatched guilt, sin and shame out of my heart and replaced it with love, joy and peace that surpassed all understanding. I am forever grateful for the Power Filled Godly life of Pastor H H Barber. Through him thousands have found Faith in Jesus Christ. - Posted by: Josephine Campbell (He Is my Spiritual Father) on: Jan 15, 2021

  • Growing up in Saskatchewan on a farm. My parents always listen to pastor Barber, I am now grown with my own family and still listen to the program today. Blessings as you continue in His service. - Posted by: Ernie Breitkreuz (Listner) on: Dec 27, 2020

  • As I have been deeply involved in our family history, Rev. Barber has been a source of some family history, but even more of an inspiration. I have never met any of this part of our family tree, but it just seems being a Barber, was enough to be considered part of their family. A legacy from within our lines has left us but will will not forget his barber spirit. - Posted by: Paul Barber (Distant relative) on: Dec 19, 2020

  • Thank you pastor Barber for your devotion to the Lord, my dad, Samuel Bown was killed sadly by a drunk driver, he served the Lord for many years. I likened him to pastor Barber, with quiet humility but with so much reverence and devotion. May you as a family know how much your dad precious poppa have to so many people “Well done thy good and faithful servant enter now into the joy of the Lord” - Posted by: Lee Ann Bown (Viewer) on: Dec 13, 2020

  • I was 10 years old when Pastor Barber came to Calvary Temple. I remember it well. He had red hair and so did I. My mother immediately appreciated his preaching, and I soon came to love it as well. He was a great expositor of God's word and was a warm and loving pastor. My sympathies go out to the family - his presence shall surely be missed. - Posted by: Lesley Hull (Hart) (Grew up in Calvary Temple) on: Nov 19, 2020

  • I went to Calvary Temple, but met him at my cousin Bobby's funeral. He was nice to talk to. - Posted by: Joyce Lancaster (visitor) on: Nov 15, 2020

  • My parents, now both deceased attended Calvary Temple faithfully for many years. They always spoke very highly of Pastor Barber. Two of my children were actually baptized by him. He was a true and humble servant of God. Thank you for your many years of faithfully spreading the Word. May you rest in eternal peace. - Posted by: Angela (attended Calvary Temple) on: Nov 14, 2020

  • Pastor Barber profoundly affected my life. My mom and uncles got saved in the old Calvary temple back in the 70’s. My mom was trying to find a side door to leave as he was giving an altar call,, and when she got up the rest of the people with her... Pastor Barber saw them and said “oh look at the young people coming up leading the way”. They all went to the front, convicted and crying and got saved right there! Pastor Barber was a man who I deeply admired and respected. His voice feels like home since I grew up hearing him preach for many years. I also enjoy “Faith to Live By@ and hearing him preach at the annual Winnipeg prophecy conference. I loved his heart for prophecy! He was a humble man who truly loved the Lord. Pastor Barber will be greatly missed! But I know his reward lies in Heaven. Thank you for your obedience and for answering the call on your life. Welcome home and we will all meet again soon and very soon! - Posted by: Julie Plaza (Congregant of Calvary Temple ) on: Nov 05, 2020

  • Pastor Barber's heritage has long been recognized by me. My Grandparents George and Delaine Haacke were long time members of Calvary Temple from 1950 to 1971 and then after my grandmother passed in 1990 Pastor Barber did her funeral, my grandfather moved back to Winnipeg from around 1991 to 2006 when he passed. Pastor Barber was also at his funeral. He left a profound legacy on my mom's family line. My mom told me many stories of Pastor Barber as I grew up and I had the opportunity to meet him on several occasions. His ministry touched my life as a young man too as God called me to a ministry lifestyle. I would listen to his messages on the radio and was in awe of his influence for many years. I don't know many ministers like him who had such a profound influence. His life legacy in Calvary Temple still lives on and I know my grandfather served Calvary Temple for many years on the board of it and even after moving back to helping count the offering weekly until almost to the week when he passed away. Pastor Barber will be missed by many. Though i only had a few encounters with him, I am thankful for what he laid as a foundation in my family heritage. - Posted by: Mike Hendrick (Pastor Barber was my grandparent's pastor) on: Nov 03, 2020

  • Our sympathy to Pastor Barber's family. My husband & I are so thankful for Pastor Barber. He officiated at our wedding in 2001. He also officiated at my Mom & Dad's wedding in 1956. Pastor Barber gave an alter call for Salvation in 1972, in the original Calvary Temple church, and I went forward and gave my life to Jesus, as Mrs Barber prayed with me. Pastor Barber has gone to his Eternal reward in Heaven! - Posted by: Wendy & Garth (Church) on: Nov 03, 2020

  • We are saddened by the passing of Rev. Barber but we rejoice that he is now in the presence of His Savior whom He loved and served so well. Having watched his program for a number of years, Rev. Barber was like a family member. We were always blessed by his sincerity and passion in preaching the Word. He will be missed but he has left a wonderful legacy and his words will live on. No doubt he has set a genuine Christian example to follow. We pray God's peace and presence will be a reality to all the family members. We are confident that He has heard the words "Well done, thou good and faithful servant" May God bless those who will carry on his faithful ministry. - Posted by: Majors Winston and Cora Dodge (Retired Officers with The Salvation Army( Newfoundland) (Faithful viewers of "Faith to Live By") on: Nov 01, 2020

  • We have watched Faith to Live By for a number of years, and loved listening to and learning from to the timeless messages of Pastor H. H. Although he was our TV friend, we are looking forward to meeting him in person one day in Heaven! We are so glad that he is with our Saviour, but we know that this will be a difficult time for you, his family and church. We pray for comfort for you, and for the whole Faith to Live By family! - Posted by: Rod & Julie Wilson, Guelph ON (TV viewer) on: Nov 01, 2020

  • Pastor Barber has meant so much to thousands of lives - he assumed the mantle of servant leadership and ministered faithfully across generations to families like my own ... Pastor Barber's weekly bulletin caption "Expect great things from God; attempt great things for God" captures his life and unwavering devotion. - Posted by: Michael Hart (Long time family friends) on: Nov 01, 2020

  • I remember Pastor Barber as the most kindest man and so genuine. Coming from the poorest part of the Northend Pastor Barber never treated me (us) different from the other kids. This was in the late 50's early 60's that I went there and went to Red Rock Camp. I have lots of great memories thank you Pastor Barber for all you have done, you will be deeply missed but never ever forgotten. • My deepest condolences to the Barber family. I remember Pastor Barber when I had attended Sunday school and sang in the church choir at Calvary Temple. His sermons touched many lives and helped people turn their lives around for better. His faith in God was strong and he professed every word right from the bible. He will be missed by many people around the world. - Posted by: Gerry (Sunday school ) on: Oct 31, 2020

  • I just learned about Pastor Barber's passing today through my cousin Eunice Gibson. I am happy that he's in Heaven. I always watch Faith to Live By on Sundays and loved his preaching/teaching and the singing. I wish I could go to Winnipeg someday, but I am 89 years old now and travel is difficult. It's nice that he lived to that age. He will be well missed. Now he can sing and rejoice in Heaven. Lillian Gibson - Posted by: Lillian Gibson (Coggins) (Not sure) on: Oct 31, 2020

  • I accepted Jesus many years ago. when I was about 16 years old, along with my good friend Rob McKelvey. Pastor Barber mentored and baptized me. Throughout my 78 years, God’s blessings and Christian upbringing has stayed in my heart, been reflected in my life work and behaviour and I owe much of it to Pastor Barber and his love of preaching and sharing his messages of my Lord. I sang in the CT choir, joined Youth for Christ and have been blessed all these years with my CT upbringing and the committed of Pastor Barber. God bless Pastor Barber in his heavenly home🍔 - Posted by: Trevor Hayden (Follower) on: Oct 31, 2020
