BERNICE VERONICA SMITH
November 7, 1926 - October 30, 2020
Mom will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by her children, Janice Paulick, Michael Smith (Bruce Smith), Alison Smith (Dan Postnicks); grandchildren, Hunter Postnicks and Laura Postnicks. She is predeceased by her husband Stanley (July 2009), and her daughter Leslie Anne (2019); her parents, William and Ksenia Glowacki; brothers, Walter, Michaj, Julian and Stanley; her sisters, Mary Thomas, Cecilia Glowacki, Helen Packowich; and a dear nephew Brian Mann. She is survived by her sister Theresa Mann (Norman) and many nieces and nephews.
Mom was born in Winnipeg at St. Joseph's Hospital, the seventh of nine children, and raised in the vicinity of Holy Ghost Church and School where she spent her formative years. After junior high at Holy Ghost, she attended St. John's High School. She went to work at The Bay where she met our father and they were married on May 28, 1949. After raising her children, Mom went back to work at Eaton's for 20 years.
Mom was an avid reader and loved to attend many cultural events including music, opera, ballet and theatre. She was also a devout Roman Catholic. Mom believed in walking for physical activity and did at least half an hour every day until her early 90s. Mom and Dad loved to go camping with their children, taking numerous trips to the lakes of Manitoba and road trips out west. Later, they made Gimli our go-to place for the summers where we had many happy times. Mom's other travels included a trip with one of her sisters to England and her travels with Dad on a Caribbean Cruise and many trips to the Maritimes.
Mom was thrilled to become a grandmother and enjoyed baking for her grandchildren, family dinners, celebrations, and attending their activities to cheer them on.
The family would like to thank all of the staff at Middlechurch Personal Care Home, the excellent staff on B2 especially Tracy and Richard, where Mom spent her last three years.
There will be a private interment at Holy Ghost Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made in Mom's name to Siloam Mission's Meal Program.
Don't think of her as gone away,
Her journey's just begun,
This earth is only one.
Just think of her as resting
From the sorrow and the tears
In a place of warmth and comfort
Where there are no days and years.
Think how she must be wishing
That we could know today,
How nothing but our sadness
Can really pass away.
And think of her as living
In the hearts of those she touched
For nothing loved is ever lost -
And she was loved so much.
