GEOFFREY HUBERT SMITH
1931 - 2020
He was predeceased by his parents, Hubert and Rose Queenie Smith (Breadmore); brother Dave and sister in-law Charlene; stepsister Dorothy Tufford; and brother-in-law Colin Maxwell. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 60 years, Rose (nee Makarchuk); his three children, Randy (Brenda), Sharalyn (Glen) Reitlo, and Michael (Nicole); and his four grandchildren, Mathew and Heather; and Alyssa and Sydney (Reitlo). He is also survived by his sister Betty Maxwell, extended family, and many important friends.
Geoff was born in Portage la Prairie on April 24, 1931.
He met Rose and they were married on July 23, 1960. They raised their family in The Pas and moved to Lac du Bonnet in 2014.
Geoffrey was a dedicated teacher who inspired and shaped many lives. After teaching for 43 years, he retired in 1994, providing more time for his gardening passion. Many will remember the beautiful yard, flower beds and vegetable garden he took so much pride in.
Dad was a kind, giving, and gentle man who helped his family, friends, students and community without hesitation or reward. He is honoured and will be greatly missed.
Many thanks to Dr. Bruneau and staff at Pinawa Hospital for the great care and compassion they provided to Dad.
A small private funeral was held in Beausejour on November 10, 2020 and he was then laid to rest in Lac du Bonnet Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.

A couple of math professors commented on how impressive my work was. One even told me later that she had never had a student like me before. I just approached math problems and presented them (in university) the way Mr. Smith taught me in high school. Over the years, I realized how lucky I was to have him for my teacher. He not only trained me properly in math, but made my high school experience bearable. I'm forever grateful, Mr. Smith. THANK YOU!!! RIP... - Posted by: Doug Blocha-Fell (student) on: Jan 30, 2021

Mr. Smith was the best teacher I ever had. His dedication and caring were evident every day in class. He commanded a respect from every student that no other teacher had. He never had to raise his voice in class. Math was my favourite class and this foundation served me well in university. I’ll never forget his quiet smile and manner. - Posted by: Angie (Leel) Johnson (Student) on: Nov 18, 2020

How does one begin to say how much we appreciate having had Geoff/Mr. Smith in our lives? He was our neighbour, teacher, mentor, advocate and friend. His advice was welcomed & often solicited. He somehow got us through the confusing world of mathematics. He once filled an entire chalkboard solving an algebraic equation, then stood back and said "Isn't that beautiful?" For one shining moment we students were believers! You could count on him for extra help always! He generously shared flower bulbs along with gardening tips. As a close neighbour, he never once remarked on our weed collection! His garden and yard were uncontestable. He was dedicated to his family, church and of course, his students. As we shifted through being his students, colleagues and neighbours, we came to the realization of just how special he was and what a positive influence he had on all of us. We will treasure that always! Doug, Ellen, Patrick, Graham & Kelly Long - Posted by: Doug & Ellen Long (Teacher, colleague, neighbour & friend) on: Nov 15, 2020

Kathy remembers Mr. Smith as her teacher in junior high and then as a very dedicated director / producer of An annual 3 act- play with the young people’s group in the United Church. My first teaching job was in Kelsey School and there was Mr. Smith, the principal. I tried hard to call him Geoff! The years go by and our daughters get to high school and there is Geoff the very competent Math teacher! He and Rose were an important part of the church family and the education segment of life in The Pas! He definitely impacted our lives in numerous ways. He will be remembered for his soft-spoken, caring ways! Our condolences to the family! Rest In Peace. - Posted by: Kathy and George Watson (Longtime friends from The Pas) on: Nov 15, 2020
