HILDE MOCK
(nee LACHSTAEDTER)
September 7, 1936 - October 25, 2020

With sadness, we announce the passing of Hilde Mock (aged 84), at the Grace Hospital. She was the 55th victim of the COVID virus in Manitoba and was exposed to the disease at Parkview Place after her forced admission.
Hilde was predeceased by Robert, her loving husband of 55 years, in 2011, and by her beloved son, Thomas, with whom she shared her birthday, in 2009. She was also predeceased by her parents, Franz and Rosa (nee Kalcher) Lachstaedter. She is survived by her daughters, Corinne Mock and Connie (Richard) Pope, along with her adored grandchildren, Courtney and Melissa (Paul Shirtliffe) Pope and Andreas Mock. She is also survived by her brother, Helmut (Rosemarie) Lachstaedter and numerous nephews and nieces in Europe, along with her "grandpuppies" Baxter and Oliver.
Hilde was born in Orowitz, Romania, and after enduring the Second World War, had fled at the age of eight with her mother and younger brother to a camp in West Germany.
She often protected and cared for her brother as her mother had to work three jobs, barely scraping by during such a turbulent and frightening time. She suffered a lifetime from the effects of the unfortunate circumstances she endured during her pivotal years, and it took a physical toll later in life.
Hilde married Robert in Einbeck, West Germany, in 1956 and immigrated to Canada, arriving in Winnipeg on December 13, 1957. Mom and Dad worked hard and purchased their first and only home in 1961. Over the years, with Mom's help and Dad's knowledge and meticulous ways, their home was restored. Many a friend would refer to the home as being "cozy."
Hilde was trained in Germany, learning Shop Management and apprenticed at Bameyer for three years before coming to Canada. Hilde was a proud and faithful employee of Eaton's Polo Park for over 25 years, working in Draperies followed by the Bedding & Linens Departments.
Mom truly loved the Christmas season, baking most evenings for 6 weeks prior to Christmas Eve and making every Christmas memorable and special for her family. It was always a highlight of the season to attend her Christmas Eve dinners, given her natural cooking abilities, rarely using recipes. Mom sewed clothes when we were young and later used her talents to knit sweaters for her young granddaughters which became their favourite sweaters. She cross-stitched beautiful Christmas pieces, mainly as gifts, that will always be family treasures. In Corinne, Mom instilled the love of creating various handicrafts.
Mom and Dad inspired the love of classical music along with the smooth sounds of the Crooners. Connie always enjoyed attending operas and operettas with Mom. Mom instilled in Connie the love of family and the joy of cooking. She often shared her own recipes which were always appreciated. There was no better teacher.
Mom loved her family, always attending swim meets or volunteering for school activities that her children were involved in. When her grandchildren were born, she was always supportive of their endeavours and never failed to demonstrate her love for them. She was fiercely loyal and proud of her family.
Mom was a very devoted and loving wife to Dad and cared for him tenderly. Mom was also well known for her stubbornness even though she would make fun of this trait in her own mother. When we were young, Dad would spontaneously grab Mom for a traditional waltz around the room. Mom also loved family gatherings and truly enjoyed a good party with lots of laughter, food and drinks, which would quite often make for some very late Saturday nights.
Mom was devastated by the unexpected loss of Tom and then Dad. We are comforted, as we know they are once again together and she is finally at peace.
In accordance with Mom's wishes, cremation has taken place and no service will be held.
Mom requested donations, in her memory, be made to The Winnipeg Humane Society or other animal rescues/shelters.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • Dear Connie and Corrine, My Mamma passed away on the same day from COVID at the Misericordia Place. Maria and I were fortunate enough to spend the hours before she passed by her side. We were unaware that she had COVID at the time. I remember your mom's cakes. They were amazing. She was always so welcoming when I would walk across to the street to your home. And I was always invited to join in and eat the amazing cakes your mom made. She gave me my first Barbie Doll. I'm very sorry for your loss and that you could not be with her while she passed away. Wishing you the best. Annie - Posted by: Anne Stewrt (Dandri) (Old friend and Neighbour) on: Nov 22, 2020
