EWALD WIHSKAMP
1925 - 2020

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Ewald August Wilhelm Wihskamp on November 19, 2020, at the age of 95.
He leaves to mourn his passing his loving wife of 73 years, Hilde; his daughter Brigitte (Nick) Graver; grandsons, Matt and Adam; daughter Nancy (Jeff) Gill, grandchildren, Jennifer (Markus) Ziesmann and Evan; great-grandsons, Maxwell and Wilfrid.
Ewald was born in Bieren, Rodinghausen, Westfalia, Germany on February 6, 1925. He was an enthusiastic young man who apprenticed as a mechanic and was self-taught and skilled in woodworking, career ambitions cut short due to the war.
At the end of the war he met Hilde and the two were married in 1947. In 1953 Ewald, Hilde and their daughter Brigitte immigrated to Canada, settling in Winnipeg. Several years later their daughter Nancy was born.
Though trained as a mechanic, Ewald spent his career in Canada working in the commercial construction industry overseeing the many warehouse construction projects of Carlton Construction in St. James.
Having come from a small town in Germany, Ewald enjoyed spending summer weekends at Camp Neustadt. Until five years ago he could still be found tinkering in his beloved garage, which looked more like a rec-room and was touted as being the original 'man shack' in Winnipeg.
Dad / Opa was a kind and generous man, who loved and cared deeply about his family. He was hard working and good natured, helping anyone who asked for his assistance. We knew that if Opa couldn't fix something, then it wasn't meant to be fixed! Opa had a great respect for nature and took meticulous care of his trees, bushes and vines.
We are so lucky to have had him (and his piercing blue eyes) in our lives. He will forever be loved and missed.
The family would like to thank Brian from homecare, and the administrators and 3rd floor (East Wing) staff of Extendicare Oakview Place.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Oakview Place, Leisure and Lifestyle Department, 2395 Ness Ave., Winnipeg.
Cremation and a private family gathering has already taken place.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • My father-in-law: He was one of many European immigrants who have made Canada what it is. He endured things none of us can ever imagine and the stuff he told me would traumatize you for life.....including traipsing thru Europe in filth, hungry and being shot at during WW2 and fortunately for us captured by the Yanks in Italy. He never ate spaghetti again btw! He arrived here in ‘53 with Oma and Brigitte and a few suitcases and never took a handout working day and night to get ahead. I’m glad to have been his son-in-law and will remember him for many things but especially his uncanny resemblance to Archie Bunker from appearance and persona....I’m sure they were related! He endured some difficult times the past few years but never complained once. He’s having some liverwurst and potatoes right now and laughing at all of us I’m sure. - Posted by: Jeff Gill (Son in law) on: Nov 28, 2020

  • So sorry for the family's loss. Have missed Ewald at the camp since he left. Take care. - Posted by: Dianne Garnett (neighbour, Camp Neustadt) on: Nov 28, 2020
