FRANCESCA BASILE PATANE
December 26, 1937 – November 25, 2020

With sadness in our hearts the family of Francesca Basile Patane announces her passing at the Heritage Lodge.
Francesca, or Franca as she was known to her many friends and family, was born in Aci Sant'Antonio, Sicily, Italy on December 26, 1937. She leaves to mourn her children Josie, Angela (Cory), Cathy (Stephen) and son Riccardo (Diane). She also leaves grandchildren, Ryan (Erin), Melissa (Josh), Matthew (Kelsey), Joshua (Miranda), Stephanie, Carmen, Evan, Shaun and great-grandchildren, Maddox, Jett, Hudson, Hazel, Tucker and many other family members in Sicily. Franca was predeceased by her parents, her husband Gaetano Patane, son-in-law Bruce Haresign and very recently her sister, Vincenzina Basile Girianni in Sicily.
Our mother was a brave soul who at the tender age of 19 left her family in Sicily, got onto a great big ship and sailed to Canada to join her husband as they built a life together in Winnipeg. Together, they raised four children. She was proud of her children and grandchildren and loved them all very much.
Our parents began their life in Winnipeg in a rooming house on Maryland Street and a few years later, purchased their first home on Evanson Street in the West End of Winnipeg. In 1974, they moved to a new area called the Maples. Many parties with family and friends were celebrated at the Patane house with lots of cooking and of course a few glasses of papa's vino.
Mom was a skilled seamstress and had an amazing eye for detail in the many clothes she sewed for herself and her family. She worked for many years as a sewing machine operator at Monarch Industries, and at Victoria Leather. We firmly believe that Mom was the inventor of the patchwork purse as we all had one long before they became "a thing."
In 1980, our family purchased a lot in Glen Bay, just past Gimli where they built a little cottage. It was their happy place. With a great big garden at the cottage and one almost as big at home, there was canning and freezing that went on every summer. There were many adventures and shenanigans at the cottage every summer including many games of Sette e Mezzo and of course Briscola. Our mother was a card shark!! Those memories are golden.
Mom was fiercely proud of her Sicilian culture. Ciccina, as they fondly called her, spoke frequently of her friends and family in her beautiful Sicilia. Mom made the best cannoli and arancini ever. Sunday mornings were about making bread, the sugo (tomato sauce), and going to church. The smell of tomato sauce cooking with basil will forever be our mother's signature scent.
Mom was a devout Catholic, and though her mobility challenges in her later years prevented her from attending Mass at Holy Rosary in person, she routinely watched Mass from home.
A COVID compliant Mass of the Resurrection to be celebrated on Tuesday, December 1, 2020 at 11:00 a.m., at Holy Rosary Church with Father Sam Argenziano as the officiant. Due to COVID restrictions attendance is restricted to the immediate family only. To access a live stream of the funeral please go to YouTube Holy Rosary Parish Winnipeg, https://youtu.be/dhzK7-cXimw
Thanks to the staff at Heritage Lodge for their care of mom in her last days.
In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, please send donations to Diabetes Canada or The Arthritis Society of Winnipeg.

Riposa in pace mamma. Per sempre nei nostri cuore.

  • I will always remember Mrs. Patane as a kind, generous and loving person who always made me feel welcome. I enjoyed her animated story telling and her fierce love of her family. I am recalling the very many fond memories I have of her over the many years that I was blessed to be included in your family. While circumstances dictate that we cannot gather to pay our respects to your beloved Mother, let me share with you the fact that my life has been enriched by knowing Mrs. Patane. While I can not attend in person to give you a hug and offer my most sincere and heartfelt condolences at your loss, know that I am with you in my thoughts, a soft smile on my face as I realize that she is once again reunited with Mr. Patane. May you all find strength in one another during this sad time, try to focus on all the wonderful experiences you have shared, she will forever be with you in your hearts.
