WILLIAM (BILL) SIMCOE
May 16, 1931 - November 27, 2020

Sadly on November 27, at the age of 89, William (Bill) Simcoe passed away. Bill was born May 16, 1931 the youngest of four children.
Bill grew up in East Kildonan, met Elizabeth and married in 1964. They remained in East Kildonan where they raised their family. Bill was very proud of his family and granddaughters and always took every opportunity to let them know. Bill was predeceased by his sister Anne and brothers, Steve and Nick. For all the hats he wore throughout his life, Bill never shied away from rolling up his sleeves to volunteer his time and run different organizations be it with work, church, his children's hobbies, or pretty much anyone who asked for his help. His pride in his Ukrainian culture led to volunteering over a number of years with the Kiev pavilion during Folklorama. Bill will be remembered for his strong work ethic and storytelling. Although he never lacked for stories, one story that he recited through his life with fond recollection was the times he spent playing junior and senior baseball in his youth. His passion for baseball led to coaching stints with the local community club. He enjoyed sports, spent his early retirement years travelling with Liz and enjoyed many years at the family cottage in Grand Beach.
Bill had a 38 year career as a Pipefitter with Canadian National Railway. During that time, he also served with the local union in roles that culminated with a position as National Treasury Secretary of Pipefitters, a position he served with pride. He looked forward to seeing his fellow CNR retirees for monthly breakfasts until he could no longer attend.
Bill was a regular attendee and proud parishioner of Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Church for his entire life. He enjoyed anything to do with the church and volunteered and served on various councils and organizations over the decades. One of his last positions, one that he enjoyed and looked forward to every week because of the camaraderie, was as a member of the highly efficient machine that was the church perogy making crew.
William is survived by his wife Elizabeth, son Stephen and daughter Marissa (spouse Andy Willms), and two grandchildren, Eva and Ellen.
The family would like to thank the staff of 5A at Holy Family Home for their tireless care and compassion and the health care staff in the Covid-19 ward where they are faced with a very tough job. Gratitude is also extended to Janice Waitt, social worker and nurse Adam at Holy Family Home for their support, compassion and patience.
Due to current restrictions no service will be held at this time. Cremation has taken place.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • I'm so sorry to hear of Bill's passing. He lived across the hallway from my Dad at Holy Family Home. Bill always had a kind smile and something nice to say to anyone who walked by his room. I enjoyed his conversations and will miss seeing him there when we all are allowed back to visit. - Posted by: Maureen Hepples (Friend) on: Dec 16, 2020
