JEANNE MARGARET SCHMIDT
(nee BUSCHAU)
1933 - 2020
Mom was predeceased by her loving husband, Erwin Schmidt, in April 2018 after almost 65 years of marriage. She was also predeceased by her parents, Fred and Anna Buschau of Plumas, and within their immediate family, her siblings, Harold Buschau, Keith Buschau, and Frances Schmidt.
Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Larry and Robert (Pat), daughter Karen Humiski-Schmidt (Doug); grandchildren, Clarissa (Tyler) Robb, Lisa (Manuel) Hildebrandt, Michael (Vanessa) Schmidt, Daniel Schmidt (Kara Tomasson), Sydney (Patrick) Richardson, and Marlo Humiski. Mom was blessed with great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Kaitlyn, Kayden, Asher, Mackenzie, Brielle, and Jax. Mom is also survived by siblings, Shirley, Julie, Peggy, Bill and an extended family much too long to list and who were all very dear to her heart.
Mom's childhood was spent growing up on a farm. In 1950 she moved to Winnipeg to further her education and was employed as a secretary at the United Grain Growers until she married dad. Later, her education continued as we kids grew, culminating with a Bachelor of Arts (University of Manitoba, 1978).
As a family we travelled to England, France, Italy, Austria, Germany, and Switzerland. In their retirement years dad and mom visited every province in Canada and every state of the U.S.A. Mom and dad especially enjoyed many winter stays in Weslaco, Texas. In 1989 mom happily stepped into the Arctic Ocean at (then) Barrow, Alaska. In 1989 dad and mom also enjoyed a Panama Canal Cruise. After many trips exploring North and Central America, mom was happy to have further travels to Israel, Egypt, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia, China, and India.
Mom was very impressed by the natural beauty of many countries and especially the cities of St. Petersburg and Moscow. She found the numerous museums, parks, fountains, and monuments amazing. An unanticipated pleasure was a free concert by Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli in the Palace Square of the Winter Palace and later attending a performance by the Bolshoi Ballet. Her interest in Russia went back to her University of Manitoba history courses in the 1970s and the knowledge that her ethnic German ancestors were among those encouraged to farm in what was then the Russia of Catherine the Great. Mom's great-grandfather's family immigrated to Canada in 1886.
Throughout their lives mom and dad were grateful for all God's many blessings and made sure everyone knew they were counted as part of their blessings. Mom's faith in God helped her throughout her life and her love of family was unconditional. She shared the same traits as our father and we were blessed to have them as parents. Mom loved to spend her days in purposeful activity and the pursuit of knowledge. She would underline the important points of items she read and often would have dad take her in search of a photocopier so that she could make copies for us. As her dementia increased she was troubled by knowing her knowledge was escaping her, but she persevered anyways. She continued reading the paper, making notes, and underlining just as always. She wrote notes to maintain order in her life until the very end.
Mom left us a note. "We never say goodbye to those we love, they always live in our memory of them, until we meet again." That part of her memory never left her.
Our family is beyond grateful for the fantastic staff at Brightwater who treated mom with great love, tenderness, and the best of care. Because of their care mom was able to be with us right until her last moments.
Mom was buried at Chapel Lawn alongside dad. A private family funeral service took place on Thursday, December 10, 2020. We are heartbroken that because of Covid we couldn't invite you to attend but know that you will be remembering her as fondly as we do.
In lieu of flowers, mom would rather you made a donation to a worthy charity.

These past several weeks got the best of me, amongst numerous other personal matters. I am now taking the much-needed time to express my most deepest sympathies to my cousins and their families, in the passing of my Aunt Jeanne; another family member who leaves us. I will remember her never-ending energy and human interest endeavours, always ensuring that her guests were taken care of, when hosting one of numerous large family (extended family) gatherings. Another unfortunate timing, that her passing could not be extended to be shared with those outside of the immediate circle. I am with hope and prayer that the family, my cousins and their families, find some peace and comfort during this very difficult time. God Bless all of you. May His Spirit continue to guide all that you do and provide you with what you need; knowing He still reigns overall. Peace, patience and prayers, Rose Held - Posted by: Rose Held (Niece) on: Jan 06, 2021
