ANTON JOSEPH THOMASCHEWSKI
May 20, 1931 - December 8, 2020
He leaves us on the same day as our mother, Cordy, who passed three years ago. He has missed her immensely and there is comfort in knowing they are together again.
Anton was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Franziska and his siblings Mary, Frances and Frank.
Anton was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will forever be remembered by his children, Gloria (Wayne), Joe (Kim), Marie (Glenn) and Irene (Ken); his grandchildren, Colin (Samantha), Jenna (Kellen), Kaitlyn (Brodie), Jesse (John), Eric (Chalsea), Melissa (Steve), Tyler, Josh (Indigo) and Kyle (Courtney); great-grandchildren, Brynlee, Harper, Mya, Hailey and Everett; sister-in-law Pat Thomaschewski and brother-in-law Chris Stone. Along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Dad was born during a May snowstorm. His parents drove from Starbuck to Winnipeg by horse and buggy to the hospital. Anton was raised in Starbuck, MB and attended Minnesota School. He was a hard worker from a young age. Before school, cows had to be milked and pigs fed. Anton and his siblings were then off to school by horse and buggy. His favourite horse on the farm was Eva. One day, on the way to school, Dad was racing his horse and buggy with friends and he hit a pole and wrecked the buggy. So, they then had to walk to school for a while. Family outings were often to Lido Plage Beach or Eagle Lake.
In 1952, Anton and brother Frank bought the Pat Duffy farm in Headingley which would eventually become Anton and Cordy's family farm.
He met the love of his life Cornelia through his sisters. They fell in love and shared many love letters while Anton was away working in the bush camps around Dryden, Ontario. Anton and Cordy were married on July 27, 1957. They lived in a tiny little house on their land. In 1963, he built their main farmhouse. This became their home for them and their four children. Dad and Mom enjoyed hosting many parties, square dancing, bowling, helping at St Charles Parish, bingo, cards, and teaching 4-H.
Dad loved working on the farm with his son and best friend Joe. He was a hard-working proud farmer, carpenter and all around mister fix-it. He enjoyed helping his family and friends whenever he could. Dad also loved having kids at the farm and often pulled them around the yard behind the tractor, three-wheeler or snowmobile. He was also known for showing off his wheelie skills on the three-wheeler or a power turn on a snowmobile or in the car. He also really enjoyed going for country drives to auction sales where he was known as Toomuchwhisky.
There are many wonderful memories of family trips to California, Toronto, Thunder Bay, Vermillion Bay and Vancouver. Mom and Dad could often be found listening to music, dancing in the kitchen, playing pool or ping pong in the basement. They were the perfect pair and married for 60 wonderful years.
Our thanks and appreciation go out to the staff at Charleswood Care Home for all the care our father received especially the last 13 days with covid. They accommodated us very professionally in these unprecedented times. As well, many thanks to the staff at Rosewood Retirement Home where he lived prior.

I can remember Mr. Thomaschewski knowing laugh at what ever Marie and I had got up to. My fondest memories is catching him humming a tune that your Mum was singing and they were about to give each other a hug and a kiss when I ran upstairs from the basement at a sleepover Marie had. They just smiled and continued about their routine as is there was nothing to see here. It was so cute. I will forever remember him as a kind and gentle man. - Posted by: Joleyne Moroz (Marie’s childhood friend ) on: Dec 12, 2020

Sincere condolences to Gloria, Joe, Marie, Irene and your families. One early memory I have of your dad is watching him build the beautiful fence and matching porch railing at my grandparents house. - Posted by: Wes Ammeter (Friend) on: Dec 12, 2020

The African Proverb “It takes a village to raise a child.” is what grows out of Headingley. The Thomaschewski’s involvement in their community with activities such as the 4-H Club, Baton lessons, working the Canteen at the Phoenix and old Headingley Halls, serving in Church and opening up their home/farm for a great place to hang-out. Thank you for being part of the village that raised great and wonderful children. My deepest, heartfelt condolences to Joe, Kim, Jesse, Tyler, Gloria, Marie, Irene and your families. Love Joy and Family. - Posted by: Joy Kulik (Fetterly) (Friend from Headingley & worked with Kim at the Grace Hospital) on: Dec 12, 2020

Curt and Anton were the same age and neighbours - in the country, everybody is a neighbour. I, myself, Anita didn't know Anton or Cordy but when I had my children ( 6 ) at the Misericordia, it was always Cordy who was there to escort me from the hospital and she was always so pleasant. It was after that whenever we saw them at social functions or church, I was drawn to your Mother Cordy and Anton and they were two of a kind - kind, pleasant, accommodating, etc. There aren't enough words to describe the beauty of these two souls. Our heartfelt condolences are with you at this time of grief, loss and sorrow. Anita and Curt - Posted by: Curt and Anita Wold (Neighbour and friend) on: Dec 11, 2020

Sorry to hear about the loss of your father, grandfather and great-grandfather. I lived with my parents Alma and Oscar Morissette across the road from your parents. Your mom hosted my surprise bridal shower in 1984! It was such a generous gesture from both your parents as we had only moved to Headingley in 1980. They were great people and my dad loved talking to him on the road while picking up his mail! I’m sure they shared many farming stories! - Posted by: Monique Smith (Morissette) (Neighbors in Headingley ) on: Dec 11, 2020
