MARIE P. MACDONALD
Marie will be loved and forever missed by her daughters, Maureen (John) and Heather (Rob); beloved granddaughters, Meghan and Emma; nephews, Michael (Madonna); Rick (Sue); Pat (Joanne); Bill (Lois), Donald (Kim); and Ian; nieces. Margaret and Cathy (Brett); and sister-in-law, Doreen as well as many great-nephews and nieces.
Marie took great interest and pride in her extended family. She was especially grateful for the generous friendship and support of her nephew Michael and niece Margaret and appreciated being part of their families' activities.
Marie was predeceased by her husband Donald; her daughter Patricia; parents Michael and Daisy McDonald; sister Joan; brothers Fred and Donald: and her brothers and sisters-in-law.
Born in Dauphin, MB, in October 1924, Marie grew up in small towns in Manitoba where her father was a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, eventually settling in Winnipeg. Marie received her teaching certificate from Normal school and taught until she married Don and began to raise a family in Brandon. Marie and Don eventually returned to live in Winnipeg and raised their daughters in St. James where they were long-time parishioners of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church.
Always setting the example for her daughters, Marie started a kindergarten in her home and then returned to teaching once her youngest was in school; she taught at both Allard and Jameswood Schools in St. James Assiniboia School division. She retired from teaching in 1989 and almost immediately began volunteering with the St. James-Assiniboia 55+ Centre; she was actively involved in the Centre until she was in her 90s. Marie was also an active member of the ADK Teachers' Sorority and will be missed by her many friends and colleagues from her teaching career.
Marie spent most summers at Clear Lake and will be remembered fondly by many neighbours and friends at the lake. Marie was known for her strength of spirit, her excellence in teaching, her willingness to help and care for others and her quiet leadership as a board member of the Seniors' Centre. Marie was always ready for a debate or a chat about the issues of the day. She demonstrated resilience in the face of the many challenges that life presented, particularly in her later years.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Charleswood Personal Care Home for their care for the past two years.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a private funeral will be held.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Marie's memory to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, or a charity of one's choice.

I remember so many family dinners with my great aunts (Marie and Joan). I will especially remember fondly their delicious casseroles they graced us with many times. Our great aunts were such an important presence in my family household throughout our life. It is overwhelmingly disheartening that they are now both gone. However, the memories I will have of them will live on for the rest of my life, which I feel honoured and blessed to hold in my heart. Aunt Marie, you will be lovingly missed. - Posted by: Tanya Burley (Great-Niece) on: Dec 12, 2020
