GEORGE ROBERTSON

With fond memories and love, we announce the peaceful passing of George Robertson on December 5, 2020, at Riverview Health Centre.
George is lovingly remembered by his daughter, Jess (Matt); siblings, Joan (Ray), Jim (Emily), Dave (Barb), Irene and Debbie; brother-in-law, Gord (Lorraine); sisters-in-law, Deb (Bruce), Shirlie and Joanne; along with many nieces, nephews and friends. George was predeceased by his parents, John and Dora; brother, Bill; brother-in-law, Curly; wife, Bev; and son, Jayson.
George was born in 1955 in Winnipeg, Manitoba where he grew up and later met Bev. George and Bev both enjoyed many camping trips together and eventually George proposed while out camping. They married in 1979. The two both grew up in the St. James neighbourhood where they then bought their own house and raised their first child, a puppy named Champ. In 1984 they welcomed their son, Jayson, into the world then their daughter, Jessica, in 1988. George loved being a dad and was always helping to build snow forts while shoveling, and teaching Jay and Jess to ride bikes, remodel a basement, and parallel park.
George graduated from Sturgeon Creek Collegiate and later from Red River College as a journeyman electrician. He began his career with Kelvin Electric and then moved to Griffin Wheel Company where he retired after working there for 34 years. George loved working with his hands and was a handyman through and through. He always kept himself busy with new projects at home, and his wife and kids always joked that he never fully finished them. He was also always helping with projects for his extended family and enjoyed working with his brother, Dave, especially when it meant figuring out how to do something they had never done before. Even while undergoing chemotherapy regularly in his last two and a half years, George could be found building fences, sheds, and doing other installations or repairs. He gave his time generously to others and enjoyed helping his family and spending time with them doing what he loved.
George was also a joker, animal lover, and gardener. He was known for his tomato crop which always yielded far more tomatoes than he or his family could ever eat. He also had a competitive streak, never letting his kids win at Monopoly, and always introducing his in-laws to the "Robertson rules" when playing cards. His optimism, kind spirit, and generosity will be deeply missed.
His family are thankful for the excellent care he received from the staff at the CancerCare unit at the Grace Hospital and the compassion and kindness shown to him in his last days from the staff at Riverview Health Centre. We are truly grateful.
A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date when it is safe to gather to remember George.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society or CancerCare Manitoba.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • When I was 8 George let me help him with the Winnipeg Tribune. At 11 he gave me the route on Roseberry. I did that till 14. We lived a few houses down the street on Roseberry in our youth. At that time nobody ever moved. RIP George - Posted by: Glenn (Friend) on: Dec 13, 2020

  • Truly, I didn't know your dad. But I know your family. So I know he had a heart of gold, nerves of steel, a laugh that filled a room, and was loyal, dependable and loving. You have a lot people around to remember how great your dad was. Let them share their happiness and the honor of knowing him. Dads are different than Moms but we miss them all the same. I hope your memories and theirs can bring a smile to your face and a comfort to your heart. - Posted by: Michelle Snare (Friend of family) on: Dec 12, 2020

  • My Uncle George was a great guy. Every time I visited Winnipeg after moving away we would meet up at Uncle Dave's for a beer or three and some great laughs. In the early days of Summer the talk would always turn to tomatoes and who's plant had already started to bear fruit. The best joke was when Dave put store-bought fruit on one to try and one up George. It was always fun to enjoy George's dry and subtle wit. It complemented the humor of his brothers tremendously. The get togethers with George and all my other Aunts and Uncles for birthdays or Christmas were the most memorable of my youth. George and Bev were always there to enjoy the event. I will miss them and I know they are together again with Jayson. I look forward to coming back to Winnipeg soon for a Celebration with all my Aunts and Uncles and to remember Uncle George. - Posted by: Mickey Robertson (Nephew) on: Dec 12, 2020
