LUIGI ANTONIO (TONY) QUAGLIA
Predeceased by parents, Olga (nee Vacca) and Franco Quaglia, immigrated to Trail, BC, from Gagliano Aterno, Italy. Tony is survived by his sister, Celeste and her children, John and Laurie; and, by his dear brother, Don (and sister-in-law Mavis) and their children, David and Serena. He is also survived by treasured relatives, in-laws and friends in MB, BC, AB, ON, MI, CA and NY.
Tony was fortunate to father one family and belong to two. He and (Beatrice) Jeannette (nee Farrell) married in 1959. She predeceased him in 1995. Their legacies live on in their children, Michele (David Burton), Tony (Dori Humphreys Quaglia), Jonathan (Christina) and Mona Linton (Michael); and in grandchildren, Marin (Christian Rochon), Reid, and Kira Burton; Anthony (Courtney Long), JD (Dani Di Adamo), Justy (Connor Lesperance) and Megan Linton; Noah and Jack Quaglia. Later in life, when Tony and Connie (nee Olafson) married, she brought her family and he brought his, enriching both. Tony is loved and missed by Connie and her children, Angel Olafson (Donald Mackenzie), Alicia Kapilik (Adam) and Amanda Eyjolfson (Stephan Carignan); and grandchildren, Rayne Mackenzie, and Tristan and Fynn Carignan.
Cherished memories of Papa for the grandchildren include his lively renditions of Eh! Cumpari, his well-stocked chocolate bar drawer, and his pride in their every achievement. Humble beginnings meant Tony took time to enjoy the good things hard work brings, and happiness meant family, friends, food, drink, music, stories and laughter.
Tony failed grade one in large part because he began school speaking only Italian. He worked that out and earned a BA (Chemistry) in 1952, and a BComm in 1954, both from UBC, and then a graduate degree in Hospital Administration from U of T in 1956. His health care management career was long and impactful. Some highlights: Superintendent of personal care homes, Municipality of Toronto; Assistant Executive Director, Alberta Hospital Association; Administrator, Victoria General Hospital, Winnipeg (including budgeting, planning, and negotiating the relocation of the hospital to its current site adjacent to the University); and, terms as a Director and as Chair, Catholic Health Association of Canada. He participated on several boards of directors and community organizations. He was a mentor and teacher, and received many accolades during his working life. Hired by the Grey Nuns as the first lay administrator of St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, 1969, Tony retired as President and CEO after more than 25 years of a distinguished career that included establishing new programs, attracting leading health care professionals to the city, overseeing additions to the hospital physical plant, and his favourite legacy: creating what would become St. Boniface Hospital Research, and ensuring its initial endowments through St. Boniface Hospital Foundation.
Tony lived a long, productive life and knew much love and happiness. He exemplified how to debate and negotiate with respect, and taught us many lessons in humility.
His family would like to thank the staff of the Charleswood Long Term Care Home, especially Irene, Paula, Gerard and Ilya for their work with Tony.
Information regarding a Celebration of Life will be communicated when circumstances permit.
In lieu of flowers, please raise a glass, toast a memory of Tony, and consider a donation in that memory to the Kidney Foundation, the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation, or to a charity of your choice.

I have such warm and spirited memories of sharing many family moments together with the Quaglia Family. Tony demonstrated such a wonderful sense of humor and always knew how to make us smile. Our family times together (although "wilder" in our earlier years) are a comfort in all of the beautiful memories we had together. Tony helped to facilitate us all being together sharing happiness between our families, introducing new friends, fabulous food, good wine, music, and always a story of some kind...his good natured self will be missed. Love you, and thanks for all the good memories. - Posted by: Danielle K Swerhone (Family Friends) on: Dec 28, 2020

"Mr. Tony" became a true pal, introduced to me by the close relationship between his wife, Connie, and my wife Bette-Lou. A magnanimous, intense personality who lived life to the fullest, and who I will miss dearly... love you my man. - Posted by: Barry Yanchyshyn (Friend) on: Dec 27, 2020

I had the good fortune to work with, learn from and be supported by Tony in the early 1990’s at St.B. He was a great boss, a great role model, and a lovely man. Sincere condolences to all of Tony’s family and friends. - Posted by: Karen (Shreiber) Howell (Former St. B. Co-worker) on: Dec 22, 2020

My sincere thoughts and prayers are with all the members of Tony's family. Tony was a mentor and a good friend for me as he was my Good Shepherd who led me through the challenging changing times in the 80's in health care at St. Boniface Hospital. A day did not pass by without his wonderful guidance, humor and laughter to ensure that "all would be well" and yes, so it was. Tony was a committed family man, as family always came first. He was a game changer in his time and respected the mission of the Grey Nun's legacy as he held the torch high and ran the race to the end. May your legacy Tony continue to be passed on as we will not forget you and your good works. May you rest in God's peace. Donna and I were grateful that Connie called us about Tony's passing, but we were saddened to hear the news. Tony Quaglia was one of my life mentors teaching me and helping me as I built my career in healthcare. When we lived in Winnipeg, he reached out in friendship and when we moved to Ontario, he was generous with his advice on how to lead a Catholic Teaching Hospital. I took his many valuable lessons to heart. In our home, one of his most lasting pieces of advice was: "Jeff you've got to stay humble". It is a lesson that we repeat often and a guiding principal to many of our day to day activities. Although distance and time have kept us apart, his lessons and friendship remain. May he rest in a well earned peace. - Posted by: Jeff and Donna Lozon (friend) on: Dec 20, 2020

I met Tony in 1985 upon his and Beatrice’s return from Italy! He never forget my name and wrote cards every Christmas to my family and I. I gave emotional support at other times when he needed a listening ear. He called occasionally and we chatted about family. Family was most important to him...his children, grandchildren and Connie! RIP Tony. - Posted by: Carol Niven (Friend ) on: Dec 20, 2020

When Tony was President and CEO of St. Boniface Hospital, he hired me in a senior leadership position fresh out of graduate school. I learned much from Tony early in my health care career. He was larger than life in terms of his persona and vision for healthcare. While dedicated to his work, you always knew his family was very important to him. Thank you Tony for your leadership and mentorship. RIP my friend. - Posted by: Real Cloutier (Work) on: Dec 19, 2020

I came to work for Tony at St. Boniface in 1990 as an exchange with Manitoba Health. When he greeted me he gave me a two handed handshake, as he always did, He said "You're a professional accountant aren't you?" indicating he was pleased to have another accountant on board because we were in tight financial times. I said "yes, but I never said I was a good one!" We had a good laugh about that and then he handed me the budget to fix but everything worked out in the end - Posted by: Lloyd Searcy (Former employee) on: Dec 16, 2020
