DAVID GARDAVE
He was born in the city of lights, Paris, France on February 2, 1928.
His father, a Czech diplomat, was posted to Montreal shortly after the Second World War, where David, then 17, enrolled in the Engineering faculty at McGill University, earning his B.Sc., Mechanical Engineering with Honours, four years later. Always popular with his fellow students, he was elected President of the McGill Student body in his final year.
One of the greatest honours of his life was when he was awarded an M.B.A. from Harvard University in Cambridge Massachusetts.
However, David always believed that his greatest accomplishment was the raising of his three sons, Ralph, Kevin and Bruce. An avid skier, he had the boys on the slopes every weekend as soon as they could strap on skis.
Ending his career as an entrepreneur, professor (University of Alberta) and management consultant at age 75, David embarked on a new career. Pursuing his passion for Canadian History he started to take courses at the University of Winnipeg, earning his third degree, a B.A., at age 83. He also enrolled in art classes, demonstrating remarkable skill in this area as well. Did I mention that he wrote a novel too?
A man of refined taste, David loved good food, good wine, good whiskey and classical music.
In this time of great need, please join the Gardave family and donate generously to Knox United Church, Winnipeg, enabling them to continue their vital work in our inner city - a cause dear to David's heart at https://knoxwinnipeg.ca/donate/

David attended the Lions Place Adult Day Club every week, and we became dear friends. Though the club has been closed due to Covid, I was able to maintain contact with him by phone, and thankfully visited him in person (and at a distance with a mask on) to deliver our Christmas greeting and gift three days before he passed. We will miss him dearly and will remember his joie de vivre and his enthusiasm for discussion! The world was a better place with David. - Posted by: Christine (Friend (through the Lions Place Adult Day Club)) on: Dec 26, 2020

David met my grandfather, Dov Perlov, somehow I can't recall, likely during his foray into Canadian history. He conducted many interviews with my grandfather, a Holocaust survivor, and his painstaking transcription of these interviews formed the basis of a biographical manuscript of my grandfather's tragic, storied but also hope-inspiring life. I visited David in his eccentric basement suite on occasion, meandering past the piles of news articles and other reports & archives he had collected over the years. Another time, a group of us were protesting a federal government bill at the MB Legislature, camping out in tents. I remember David visiting the site and his crawling in and out of the wall tent that served as our base, and thinking to myself how spry and youthful he seemed for a man well into his 70s. Though I didn't stay in touch with David, my family and myself are indebted to his commitment to our grandfather's story, and grateful for the time he spent with him while our grandfather's physical health was declining. He was a great fellow, an engaged citizen with a good heart for humanity. - Posted by: Alon Weinberg (Fellow ) on: Dec 26, 2020
