HELEN LOUISE PLACE
Helen was born Sarah Louise Arnold on June 9, 1940, in London, ON to Mary Elizabeth Arnold. She was placed in care of Children's Aid February 8, 1941 when her mother was admitted to the hospital with a serious kidney condition. Helen was placed in foster care with Alma and Percival Jean until February 1, 1950 when they officially adopted her and gave her the name Helen Louise.
Although she excelled in her studies, Helen left high school at age 15 to marry Gerald Carpenter and work full time. Helen and Gerald adopted John Gerald Carpenter when he was an infant after he had been placed in multiple foster homes. Helen entered the military and was a member of the Communications Reserve Squad with a ranking of Lieutenant. In 1968, Helen divorced Gerald Carpenter and returned to her studies. She entered The University of Western Ontario as a mature student and single parent to John and received her Bachelor of Arts in 1971.
In 1977, Helen married Ronald James Place and gained three wonderful stepchildren, Scott, Steve and Kristen. In 1978, Helen became pregnant after being told she could not have children. What a surprise! Susan Marjorie Place was born January 12, 1978. In 1998, Helen and Ron divorced.
After working full time for many years, Helen, at the age of 50, decided to go back to school and enrolled in Misericordia School of Nursing. Helen and her daughter Susan lived in the Misericordia Nursing residence for two years while Helen completed her degree. Never before had a child (Susan was 11) been allowed to live in the residence but Helen persuaded them. She explained to the management she was single parent and her dream was to get her nursing degree. They agreed and they were a wonderful two years of living in a dorm-like setting with so many young women and men who were also completing their nursing degree. Helen graduated at the top of her class in June 1991. Unfortunately, soon after graduating, Helen was plagued with ill health and could not work but she was incredible proud of her nursing degree.
Helen had many hobbies. She enjoyed gardening, reading, and crocheting. Always active, Helen loved to walk, especially on a cool autumn day. Helen loved animals and had many over the years.
Helen is predeceased by her father Percival Jean, her mother Alma Jean and her son John Gerald Carpenter.
Donations may be made in Helen's name to any no-kill animal charity of your choice.

I met Helen when I was 23 and she was 30. We remained friends for 50 years. We used to take Susan and Kirsten for walks in their strollers. I have to say Helen was always a true friend.I am so sad to see her gone. I will miss her. - Posted by: Linda Ward (Friend for 50 years) on: Jan 02, 2021
