Dorothy is survived by her loving husband Brian, they celebrated 52 years together; daughters, Sherry (son-in-law Mike MacVicar) and Tammy; grandchildren, Josh, Katelyn, Brandon and Alysha; great-grandchildren, Agust, Marlowe and Mason. Mom was thankful to connect with her long lost son Jerry Paul, his partner Lori Lumax and his daughter Jasmine. Also survived by in-laws, Bob and Stacey Swanson, Maureen and Lyle Olson; three sisters, Millie Henshaw, Faye Gullickson and Joyce Firestone; along with many nieces, nephews and close friends.
Dorothy was predeceased by son-in-law Jamie Kotowich; mother Gladys Kelly; in-laws, John and Violet Swanson; as well as her brothers, Marvin and Lorne; sisters, Viril, Ethel and Phyllis.
Dorothy was born in Saskatchewan and as a young child moved to Selkirk with her mother. By the time she was 17 she had moved to Winnipeg and was working at Old Dutch. In 1968 Dorothy married Brian Swanson, she became a stay at home mom until both girls started school then worked at various restaurants, Chicken Delight, Pizza Place and the MoonLighter. Dorothy's Cafe was purchased and operated from 1984 to 1994. Many great experiences, memories, staff and friendships were formed over these 10 years as part of the Winnipeg Beach business community. Dorothy returned to restaurant work at Gimli Chicken Chef, Niakwa in the Beach and the Charrier RoadHouse Restaurant. Due to increasing health concerns she finally retired from outside work but continued working at home.
Dorothy enjoyed the occasional road trip and playing VLTs. All that knew and loved her will cherish her memory forever.
We thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Gimli, Health Sciences Centre, and Selkirk Hospitals. We thank Dr. S. V. Patel who has been our family doctor for many, many years.
Cremation has taken place and no formal service will be held.
Mom was a bright light to so many over her years... a wonderful daughter, thoughtful and strong sister, an excellent employee - even better employer, sharing of knowledge and time. A fun aunt, patient mom and gramma who taught so many teenagers to drive, shared so many laughs and jokes and taught those around her to be strong, resilient and kind. A funny, sarcastic, witty woman who was the brains behind so many of Brian's creations - the love of his life and sparkle to his shine.
We love you!
Condolences may be left on her tribute wall at www.gilbartfuneralhome.com
