GORDON GEORGE CHRISTOPHER ROBINSON
1941 - 2020
Left to mourn his passing are his children, Chris Robinson (Louise), Morgan Robinson (Shawna), and Shan Rogers (Dave); and his grandchildren, Sarah Robinson and Conner Rogers. He is survived by siblings, Frazer Robinson (Janette), Catherine Masterton (John), and Maureen Hanley, all of whom reside in the United Kingdom. Gordon was predeceased by his wife of 46 years, Mary, in 2011.
Gordon was born in Shetland, Scotland, and grew up in both Scotland and South Africa. After receiving his BSc (Hon) from the University of St. Andrews, Scotland, he and Mary emigrated to Vancouver, Canada, where Gordon successfully pursued his PhD from the University of British Columbia. He joined the Botany Department at the University of Manitoba in 1968, and began a long and distinguished career in research and teaching, including serving as Associate Dean of the Faculty of Science from 1997 to 2005. For nearly a decade, from 1988 to 1996, Gordon was Director of the University Field Station (Delta Marsh), a beloved location where many happy memories were made spending time with his family, undertaking research, and supervising students. He was both a Senior Scholar (2014-16) and Professor Emeritus (2014) in the Department of Biological Sciences.
Gordon's academic interests focused on algal ecology and aquatic toxicology, and, later, sustainability science. He brought his passion for the environment and sustainability to the classroom, for which he was recognized with several excellence-in-teaching awards. In his later years, he promoted access to, and success in, math and science education in primary and secondary schools, inspiring generations of young scientists. He will be remembered for his generosity, spirited conversation, and love of family and the New England Patriots.
Gordon's family wishes to thank the staff of Grace Hospital for their compassionate care of Gordon in his final days.
In accordance with Gordon's wishes, there will be no service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Centre for Indigenous Environmental Resources, an organization whose mission was dear to Gordon's heart: PO Box 26092 RPO Maryland, Winnipeg, MB R3G 3R3, (yourcier.org).

A big shock for me to hear that Professor Dr. Gordon Robinson at Manitoba University has passed away. I am one of his students when I was doing my PhD. degree during 1981-1985 at the Botany Department. Gordon taught me two courses in algae and I learned a lot from him . He cares about his students and he was a distinguished professor and well respected and loved by his students and peoples around him. He kept in touch with me by email after all those years ago after my gradation and returned back home. Gordon is a generous and well hospitalised man and helpfull to his students. Just to remember that in 1981 when he was Acting Head of department he sent me a telegraph ( there was no internet and mobile at that time) telling me that I have been accepted for PhD. Program at the Botany Department based on my application to peruse my study at Manitona University. So he cares about students and peoples. I am sorry for your loss my professor Gordon and my condolences to your family, friends and peoples who know you. I first met Gordon in 1968, when I took his Botany course as an undergraduate. Eventually he became one of my PhD and NSERC Postdoctoral supervisors. We co-authored a number of research papers together, using nuclear track autoradiography, a technique which he helped to pioneer. He was a calming influence for a me as a hyper student, and he allowed me generous leeway to encourage and expand my interests. His gentle wit and humility endeared him to students and colleagues alike. He will be missed. - Posted by: Dr. Eva Pip (Former student, colleague) on: Jan 05, 2021

To the Robinson family. Please accept my sincere condolences on the loss of Gordon. I was a graduate student of Gordon’s in the 1980s, working at the Delta Marsh University of Manitoba field station. Gordon and I also worked on a marsh ecology research project together for five years at the Delta Waterfowl and Wetland Research Station. I can honestly say he was one of the most influential people in my life. In my opinion, Gordon was a perfect advisor. I felt he had enough confidence in me to give me a very long rope, but he also clearly knew when I needed to be gently reeled back in. I always felt very well supported and mentored by Gordon. He made science both accessible and engaging for his students. He always showed such enthusiasm for discovery and the pursuit of important research. He taught me a lot about science and academic writing, but more importantly he taught me how to be a good mentor and supportive colleague. When we would meet for lunch or converse through email, his love for his family always shone through. He was so proud of all of you and clearly loved you all and Mary, so deeply. I find some comfort in believing that Gordon and Mary are back walking sandy beaches, collecting arrowheads, and sharing a beverage overlooking a beautiful body of water. I know you will miss him deeply. He will be sadly missed, but never forgotten.💙 - Posted by: Sharon Gurney (Student, Friend & Colleague ) on: Jan 04, 2021

So sad to hear about Gordon's passing. My condolences to the family. Gordon was my supervisor during my Master's degree in the Botany department at the University of Manitoba, and I took several of his undergraduate courses before that. He was an exceptional teacher, opening up my mind to the world of LRGTs (Little Round Green Things), or algae. He passed on his passion and amazement of the beautiful shapes and structures of the algal world to many students. I kept in touch with him off and on over the4 years and was always greeted with a big, contagious smile whenever we saw each other. I remember that he graciously "covered" for me, when I was absent for a visit from a U of M inspector who visited the lab at Delta Marsh to do an inspection of our radio isotopes that we used in primary productivity experiments. Gordon told the inspector that I was out in the field. In reality, I was nursing a bad headache from the previous night's gin (which we shared, but I guess Gordon had a higher tolerance level than I). I will miss him dearly, as I also miss Mary as well. - Posted by: Dr. Brian Kotak (Friend, colleague) on: Jan 02, 2021
