SHIRLEY S. SMALLWOOD
July 16, 1937 - December 28, 2020

It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, Shirley Sophie Smallwood, at Holy Family Personal Care Home on December 28, 2020 at the age of 83.
She will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by her daughter Faith (Derrick); son Lance (Linda and daughter Liane); grandson Garrett (Lindsay); great-grandson Maddox; Mom's dearest friend Shirley Snyder; and many wonderful and caring neighbours who always looked out for Mom.
Mom retired from CN in 1994 after 28 years of service. Mom was quite proud to be employed by CN, and would always insist we shout out "Yay CN" whenever we drove past the train station.
Mom loved spending time with her grandson Garrett. She provided before and after school care for him. He filled her days with joy and kept Mom busy. During their days together, Mom would share her baking skills as well as her gardening skills with Garrett.
Mom wrote many poems about spending time with her grandson.

"Grammy's Helper"

We get out the sugar
flour, eggs and all
he pulls up a chair
he's not too tall

At the counter
we mix, blend and beat
we flour ourselves
from head to feet

These cookies are good
we agree
let's save some for Mommy!

By Shirley S. Smallwood

Mom had many fur babies throughout her life, with her latest one being "Lucky". Mom referred to him as her "roommate". She would say he cracked her up! He truly did light up her life, and filled her days with companionship.
Mom was a very independent woman, and had trouble asking for anyone's help. She raised her children entirely on her own. She taught us the importance of having a strong work ethic.
Thank you to the nurses and staff at both Luther Home and Holy Family Personal Care Home while Mom was in your care. We appreciate your care and compassion towards our mother.
Mom was a fighter, and although she beat cancer twice, sadly she was no match for Covid.

Please everyone wash your hands
and wear a mask, if not for yourself
for those around you!

At this time, Mom has been cremated and there will not be a funeral service.
Donations in Mom's memory can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.

You were taken from us far too fast!
We will miss you terribly and hold you
close in our hearts. We love you!

  • Faye and Lance- I knew your Mom through my Mom Linda. When I was young I would cut her grass at the cottage in Whytewold every summer. She'd pay me $20, and I remember thinking I am going to keep this job for the rest of my life because I thought I was rich! When she sold the place in Whytewold I was pretty sad. But then she built the "mansion" (in my kid perspective) on Willow Island and my sadness quickly dissipated. Although there was no grass to cut, I was always eager to visit because your Mom made me feel so welcome and loved. Although I haven't seen her for many years, her cheery smile and big heart provides warm memories. - Posted by: Angie Conrad (Family Friend ) on: Jan 03, 2021

  • Faye and Derrick. You have done so much for your mom over the years fixing/maintaining the house and cottage, ALWAYS putting her needs before yours. She enjoyed all your visits and everything you did for her. She would be so proud of all the work you both have done in the house and taking care of Lucky. She will be missed but never forgotten. Hold on to those memories my friend. - Posted by: Bev (Friend) on: Jan 02, 2021
