LAUREEN J. BULMAN
(nee TUCKER)

Passed away peacefully on December 31, 2020, at her home, at the age of 94. Laureen was born in Winnipeg, to Agnes Helen Tucker and Harold George Tucker, where she resided her entire adult life.
She was predeceased by her parents and her sister Eleanor Ann Spafford of Ottawa.
She is survived by her husband, John, and her three beloved sons and their families: Robert (Susan) who live in Kenora and their daughters, Carolyn (Nick Gilbert) and their children, Amelia and Willa of Auckland, New Zealand, and Anna and her partner Scott Tallon of Winnipeg; Michael in Winnipeg and his sons, Jacob (Mexico) and Torben (Winnipeg); and Philip (Elizabeth Bannister) and their daughter Julia (Laureen's godchild) in St. John's, Newfoundland. Laureen is also survived by her brother John H. Tucker, his wife Shirley and their family in Toronto. Laureen's family was her dearest joy.
In 1952 she married W. John A Bulman and they lived 68 years together until her passing. They shared many special experiences over the years.
Laureen was devoted to her family and was proud of them. One of Laureen's most memorable qualities was her creativity - she loved to write light-hearted poems and stories for children and design outdoor games like the string game and the inside out game for her grandchildren at the lake.
Laureen felt blessed to have many wonderful friends that she made over the years and deeply missed those who predeceased her. She recognized how fortunate she was to have the support and caring of such special people. Her church was John and Laureen's extended family and she always admired the selflessness of the Crescent Fort Rouge United members and ministers.
Laureen was a participant in women's interests and served on a variety of committees. She served the Jr. St. Agnes / Chown Guild of the Children's Hospital for 24 years, serving on the Executive for several years. She also took an active role on the Board of the University of Winnipeg's Women's Committee for several years. The University of Winnipeg was close to both Laureen and John's hearts and their work was recognized with the establishment of the Bulman Student Centre. She was on the board of the Prairie Theatre Exchange and was an active participant in the life of Crescent Fort Rouge United Church since her marriage serving in many capacities.
Laureen was on the Board of the YWCA for a few years where she was asked to recreate their newsletter. Calling it "bridges" she introduced articles by women prominent in their fields to inform and advise members on issues relevant to women.
As the family grew, Laureen made time to enlarge her gardens and develop her talent of painting in oils. She belonged to a number of art groups and showed her work at Medea Gallery. Her work is in many private collections. She was a regular attendant at the Winnipeg Symphony, Royal Winnipeg Ballet, theatre and art galleries.
Our family would like to extend our thanks and appreciation for her doctors, nurses, Grace Hospital and Comforts of Home-Care.
In accordance with Laureen's wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Crescent Fort Rouge United Church or the University of Winnipeg Foundation - W. John A Bulman Scholarship fund.

  • Sorry Uncle John to hear of the passing of Laureen. I wish would have heard sooner. The memories of the summers we would spend at Lake of the Woods will always be a special part of my life. I remember Aunt Laureen as a kind and easy going person. I have to say she was one of my favorite aunts because of her happy personality. I hope all of the family are moving forward in a positive way, and the memories of Laureen will be cherished by all. - Posted by: Chris Bondar (Aunt) on: Mar 03, 2021

  • I was fortunate enough to join a family business and build a personal relationship with some of our clients. Not the least of which was with a true gem of a person. I was shown kindness and respect from the beginning and she helped give me hope that the world if still full of amazingly kind people. I always enjoyed catching up with Laureen, she had a great sense of humour and such a way with keeping Mr. Bulman and me on task! She really was a beautiful person and an even better soul! She will be missed but remembered fondly! - Posted by: Kelly Morris (Professional and Personal) on: Jan 29, 2021

  • My sincerest condolences to Uncle John and the Bulman family. Auntie Laureen and all the Bulmans were always a very big part of our summer times at Lake-of-the-Woods and memories with them will always be cherished. Just this summer, driving the boat between the little island and their camp on the point, I almost expected to look over and see Auntie Laureen standing gracefully on the lawn with her easel and paints, wearing her large-brimmed sun hat. Playing cards after dinner with Penny-antes is another fond memory with Auntie Laureen and family. So many wonderful moments too numerous to list; she will be greatly missed. - Posted by: Shelagh (Gunn) Redecopp (Niece) on: Jan 11, 2021

  • I want it to sound more like a good short story of discovering my aunt post death, and be soft , elegant but captivating and end have inspiring ending. As kids we spent our summers at our family cottage on Bulman island (lake of the woods). Uncle John , auntie laureen shared the island with my parents and our cottages were connected by a path. We loved to drag out our 3 min walk and make it adventure. Once we hit Bulman cottage a new one always started. We had the magic toad pond where you can throw money it and make a wish. Uncle john would already be asking what chores we had done at home today ,,, which was usually not many .. but aunt laureen would pop out from under her gardening and say not to worry about uncle John and to come in for a visit. We loved visiting as they had an crab apple orchard , big veggie garden , flowers everywhere, and art station where aunt laureen would paint or sketch. The magic pond , lots of docks , boathouses, and haunted paths. ( we made that up to scare ourselves during night hide and seek games ) and the best part of visiting was hoping to see our cousins. Auntie Laureen was always so calm cool collected and usually let John have his way on things, so when she did voice her opinion on something she disagreed , she said it with a voice of graceful authority. You just knew her mind was made up and he better get onboard and fast. Laureen wrote beautifully and would write so many thank you notes and letters to let people she was thinking of them. As I read her obituary and read all the good she did for community and progressive she was I felt sad . Here was this incredible , intelligent , giving women that I only saw who she was at the lake for 6 week year, I would have loved to spent more time getting to her “city” side and hear her views on women’s issues , the art scene , gone to a gallery to see her work. I believe my aunt laureen was even more progressive , wise amd kinder then I thought. - Posted by: Karla Tolstoy (Niece 3rd daughter of Nancy and Tony Stephens ) on: Jan 10, 2021
