JOSEPH WILLIAM PILHUN

With broken hearts, we said goodbye to Joe, Dad, Grampa Joe, Papa Joe and Uncle Joe on January 2, 2021.
He is survived by his wife Audrey, sister Anna, daughters, Tammy (Sonny), Wendy (Todd) and Brandy (Chris), grandchildren, Eric, Ty, Lucas and Maria. Stepdaughters, Viktoria (Kevin), Tracy (Gord), step-grandchildren, Kayla (Mark), Jesse, Zachary, Lauren (Brandon), Teagan, Stephanie (Jeremy), Samantha (Kevin), Shannon, Shaylyn, and step-great-grandchildren, Claire, Clark, Blair, Asher, Landon, Hayden, Blaine.
Dad put up a year-long fight against cancer, but this courageous battle could only go on for so long.
Born in Wels, Austria on October 8, 1945, he came to Canada at age 11. Dad knew the meaning of hard work from a young age. Long haul truck driving for almost 30 years, and later teaching future Class 1 drivers was a passion, and he finished his working years doing just that. Never one to sit idle, Dad mastered far too many occupations to mention. He was always ready, willing and able to offer help to anyone who needed it, teach you how to do something, or if you were lucky, show you a better way of doing it. He always operated with the best intentions, a smile, a joke and a full heart. He had the best sense of humour ("Sense of Ha Ha" as he would call it). Dad could fix or build anything. Even when bedridden, he designed a piece of equipment to help him be more comfortable, and had his oldest grandson build it for him. In his later years, he and Audrey enjoyed travelling all over North America. Most of which consisted of riding his beloved touring motorcycle, taking photos, and finding the finest culinary delights across the country. Even though he was not a sports fan, Dad enjoyed watching all of the grandchildren participate in whatever they were doing over the years, and he was definitely one of the loudest fans.
Dad left this world knowing his greatest accomplishment in life was the love and appreciation of his family and friends.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • Joe used to come to the Sobeys bakery and say where's the buns I had not just filled it 5 minutes before he got there. Someone just emptied the bin. Joe would tell me stories about his girls and grandchildren, different jobs that he worked. I looked forward to Fridays when he came in, never a dull moment with Joe and Audrey. I will miss him dearly and the stories. God Bless my friend. Paula - Posted by: paula callender (my favorite customer and friend at sobeys) on: Jan 12, 2021

  • Michael, I and our family knew Joe in the mid seventies when Joe drove for us hauling gravel and his days operating Salmon Run Express. We knew him to have a great work ethic, friendly and a big heart. He loved children, always talking about his girls, and teasing Ryan, our youngest. We are sad to learn of his passing, have fond memories of those days. We can't imagine how hard it was for him, as he had such a big family to leave. And for all of you to lose him. Our sincere thoughts are with you all. - Posted by: Michael and Jan Lapka (Friend) on: Jan 10, 2021

  • I am truly heart broken you have gone too soon, you will be missed more then you can ever know, you touched so many lives. I for one will miss you so much, our talks, our laughing oh and those nick name's my god we all had nick name's. You always made me laugh on my worst days you were always at the hospital, and when you met Audrey and said you have to meet her, then I said Joe you have to marry her. He smirked and and said why? I said because she is the best thing that ever happened to you and I had a new Friend we shared so many memories I will miss you you will always be in my heart.
