JOAN RUTH HALAIKO

It is with very heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our Mom, Joan Ruth Halaiko, at the age of 87 years old, of Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Joan Ruth Halaiko, daughter of Sally and Steve Owcharuk, passed away peacefully at Kildonan Home (Revera) on the morning of Tuesday, March 9, 2021.
Joan thanks all staff, and residents for the wonderful conversations and compassionate care!
Mom was predeceased by her ex Stan Halaiko, common-law partner Walter Tywoniak, mother Sally Owcharuk, father Steve Owcharuk. Joan leaves to mourn her daughter Brenda Franz (Bob); and sons, Perry (Rene), Kris (kh); and grandchildren, Taylor and Paige.
Mom went to Isaac Newton High School. Our Mom had a big heart and a big will to help others. She never judged anyone or turned anyone away. She treated people equally. She always gave us a hug or would hold our hand. She made sure her children had food, clothing, a home and money to pay the bills. She loved us thru good and bad times. She believed in God even though she wasn't a regular Church goer. She prayed for people, all her life. She went thru difficult times as a young mother and eventually left my father, with her children in hand to start a new life. That was a huge and difficult step back in the day. Our Mom became very strong and independent once she started working again. She worked at Ellen and Elgin Senior Centre for some time. Later she worked at the Government Taxation Department. Mom met lifelong friends wherever she worked. She became a member at the AA Foundation where she met more of her lifelong friends. Some members would call her at home where she always took the time to help them and give them advice. She was a leader at the AA Foundation. We are very proud of her for that. Mom took care of funeral arrangements for my grandparents and my aunts and uncles. She did this on her own, and rarely asked for help. Now we see how much work she did for others.
Mom went thru cataract surgery, breast cancer and a knee replacement and never complained. She got back on her feet fast because she always wanted to be independent. Mom never pressured her children when it came to finding work, once we left school. She would suggest things, but there was never pressure. Mom loved pets and we took in a few cats and dogs throughout our lives. Pets played a big part in our lives.
Mom was a member of the Golden Girls Women's Club. Hanging out with these women gave Mom some time back that she had lost. They would go on vacation to the US, to some cottages at the lake, or for Chinese food. They laughed and laughed and made fun of each other. They loved to tease Mom. These women had a strong bond for one another. These were very happy times for Mom.
Mom met her common-law partner Walter. They went to social gatherings and many trips in the car or train across Canada. They loved seeing the different landscapes and talking with new people. They visited family and friends on the East Coast as well as the West Coast.
Mom will be missed by the many people who she became close to. May the happy memories fill that void in everyone's heart and life. Mom will be missed dearly. She is in Heaven now. The bedsores won't hurt her anymore. Mom is with Walter, and her Mom and Dad, and Stephie, whom she loved dearly. Thanks Miriam, and Donna for all the lovely conversations which kept Mom's memory going.

Thanks Mom for the life you have given us, and the lessons you have taught us. We are better people because of you. XXXOOO. "Love Ya - Love Ya more", Mom would say. We will see you again Mom.
Love your Family.

Thanks to all staff, caregivers, and residents at Kildonan Home (Revera), Middle Church Home, Deer Lodge Hospital, St. Boniface Hospital, for taking care of Our Mom. Your love and compassion to take care of people is beautiful.

Condolences & Memories (10 entries)

  • We never got to spend much time with my mom's (Terry Roscoe) side of the family but I always remember it being such a special time when we did...Aunty Joan made appearances on several of these times and always treated my sister Kerris and I like little princesses- I believe Aunty Joan & my baba (Nadia Roscoe) came up with our nickname "salt and pepper" because we were always together and my sister has light hair and I have dark...I know for certain Aunty Joan was an inspiration to my mom and someone she admired & loved with all her heart....my mom would always tell my when she saw or had conversations with Aunty Joan- always the highlight of her day...I believe Aunty Joan became a mother figure to my mom as she lost her parents too early- I'm so grateful she had Aunty Joan as a confidant and trusted soulđź’ś I thank you all for sharing your mom with us- a bit of her remains in us...Kristina đź’ś - Posted by: Kristina Markus (Family) on: Mar 30, 2021
