CAROLE ROMANYK
(nee TOPOROWSKI)
June 8, 1920 - March 19, 2021

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Carole Romanyk at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg.
She will be deeply missed and profoundly mourned by her daughter Doreen, husband Ted and granddaughter Anjelica; daughter-in-law Handzia and granddaughter Julianna; nieces, Sharon Hobbs, Joanne Nakonechny (Gordon Slade), Carole Nakonechny, Doreen Large (Philip) and Marlene Kovacs, as well as numerous nephews, nieces and their extended families.
Carole had a long and busy life that began in Pine River (MB) where she was born the youngest of three daughters to Ukrainian-Canadian pioneers Felix (Michael) and Aniela Toporowski (nee Charzewski). She completed her education at Dauphin Collegiate and Shaw's Business College in Toronto to become a legal secretary, and worked in this capacity in Toronto, Windsor, Winnipeg and Dauphin. Later in her career, she also held positions with the St. Vital School Division (Hastings School) and at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg.
In 1949, Carole married Alexander Albert (Alex) Romanyk and settled in Roblin (MB) where they had two children: Doreen Alexis and Robert Donald (Bob). Following the family's relocation to Winnipeg in 1959, she and her family became active members of the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral as well as numerous Ukrainian organizations, including the Ukrainian Women's Association of Canada, where she served as Curator of its Ukrainian Museum of Canada (Manitoba Branch) for many years.
Artistic in countless ways, including music, art and handcrafts, Carole attended the University of Manitoba and the Banff Centre for her chosen medium of weaving. Known across Canada as an accomplished fiber artist who incorporated Ukrainian history into her woven art, she had solo exhibitions in Toronto, Winnipeg and Saskatoon, along with many shared exhibitions throughout Canada. She was awarded "Best In Show" at the International Weavers' Convergence in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Carole was a long-time member of the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral, the O. Koshetz Memorial Choir and the Ukrainian Women's Association of Canada, and a committed supporter of many organizations including St. Andrew's College (University of Manitoba), Oseredok Cultural and Educational Centre and the Ukrainian Canadian Foundation of Taras Shevchenko. Intelligent and warm, with a ready laugh and an infectious zest for life, Carole was devoted to her family and her Ukrainian-Canadian community. She was predeceased by her husband, Alex, in 2015 and son, Bob, in 2018.
The family would like to acknowledge with respect and deep gratitude the staff at Holy Family Home for the excellent and loving care that Carole received during her residence of more than a year. Our gratitude as well to Dr. Liane Arcinas, Dr. Daniel Fama and their staff at St. Boniface Hospital (Emergency Department and Unit 6A).

Vichnaya Pamyat! Forever Remembered!

Funeral and interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the Ukrainian Museum of Canada (Manitoba Branch), 1175 Main Street, Winnipeg (MB) R2W 3S4; or to St. Andrew's College, University of Manitoba, 29 Dysart Road, Winnipeg (MB) R3T 2M7.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Very sorry to hear of Carole's passing. I admired her as an artist, as a "Soyuzanka", as a supporter of the Ukrainian Museum of Canada and as a mother. Our paths crossed only rarely, but she left an elegant impression upon me. I had hoped to attach a photo taken of Carole and daughter, Doreen, in 1965, when I first met them. Unfortunately, this tribute would not accommodate it. Sincere condolences, Doreen and family! - Posted by: Leona Faryna Bridges (Acquaintance) on: Apr 11, 2021
