MARLENE JEAN WIESS
(nee ALCOCK)
1937 - 2021

It is with great sadness that the family of Marlene Jean Wiess announces her passing on March 30, 2021, at the Grace Hospital, Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Marlene is survived by her husband Len and four children, Jim Wiess (Lorna), Barry Wiess (Sydney), David Wiess (Janet) and Heather Palmer (Mitch). Marlene was blessed with 11 grandchildren, Travis Wiess (Katie), Devin Wiess (Melissa), Erica Rempel (Adam), Brett Wiess, Drew Wiess, Craig Wiess, Matthew Wiess (Tannis), Chloe Wiess, Tyler Wiess, Bryana Palmer and Brenley Palmer, seven great-grandchildren, sisters, Carole Alcock and Ruth Halldorsson (Brian), brother-in-law Allan Wiess, and sister-in-law Thelma Rafnson, plus numerous nieces and nephews.
Marlene was born in Selkirk, Manitoba on May 13, 1937 to Harry and Margery Alcock. Marlene was baptized and confirmed at the Anglican Church in Selkirk. She married Len in 1955 and joined the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Marlene was always a caregiver and had the gift of making everyone feel special.
They resided in Selkirk until Len joined the Canadian Armed Forces. As a young family they lived in Victoria, Halifax, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal before returning back to Manitoba. No matter where they were stationed Marlene always made the house feel like home.
Marlene found joy in cooking, sewing, needlework and ceramics to name a few. Her passion for genealogy led her to many trips to England and Germany to discover her ancestry and connect with her extended family abroad.
When Len retired they decided to start a new adventure running a fishing lodge. As a couple they loved the outdoors and enjoyed the 19 years at Caribou Lake.
The family would like to thank Dr. M. Braun from Access West and the staff at the Grace Hospital for their respectful care.
As much as Marlene loved flowers we are asking that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.

Condolences may be left on her tribute wall at www.gilbartfuneralhome.com

Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • I was saddened to read about Marlene's recent passing. We lived across the street from each other on McLean Avenue going back many, many years. My sincere condolences to Len (and family) as well as to her sisters Carole and Ruth. From: Elsie Lister (nee Kushnier) - Posted by: Wendy Lister on behalf of her mom, Elsie Lister (Friend from a long time ago) on: Apr 04, 2021

  • I was saddened to hear the news of Marlene’s passing, however, I concur with the text above “everywhere Marlene went, she made people feel special.” During the few too brief times we met- mostly whilst she visited my Nan and Brother to discuss their shared passion of genealogy- she struck me as kind hearted, gently spoken and, always felt like part of a family I wished I’d had more time to get to know, and would be proud to call family. I wish you and your family my deepest condolences and, my love during this difficult time. - Posted by: Shaun Wood (Second Cousin Twice Removed) on: Apr 04, 2021

  • Words are not enough to describe a person such as Marlene, she was everything a woman should strive to be. You knew how much she loved you when she treated as her own. My family and I share in your loss. Catherine Will (O’Brien) - Posted by: Catherine (Friend of the family) on: Apr 03, 2021
