JUTA RATHKE

Loving wife, mother, friend to many, and dedicated volunteer.
Juta was born in Estonia in 1928. During the Second World War as the Russians were advancing on their country, she and her parents fled. Captured by the Germans in the Baltic Sea, they were taken to a labour camp in Germany. Mom and her mother survived and escaped. Mom completed her education in Germany, and applied to move to Canada. In Ontario she met and married her husband Austin. The family moved to Winnipeg and once settled Mom made many lifelong friends. She began volunteer work at Grace Hospital when it first opened and continued service there for over 47 years. She quilted with treasured friends who named themselves the Nimble Thimbles.
Predeceased by parents, William and Henrietta, and husband Austin. Survived by children, James (Jim) and Karen, and many friends. Special recognition to Ann, Loretta, Willetta and Kathie. You will always be treasured for the memories and friendship you gave.
In accordance with her wishes, no service will be held.

  • I just found out about Juta's passing today. I had the privilege to know Juta through her participation in the Golden West Adult Day Program. We had so many great times and she brought a lot of joy into her Friday group. She was well liked and was so easy to talk to. She shared many a story about her life and I will forever be grateful for the visits I had with her at her home. Thank you for sharing your mum with us. She will be truly missed at program. - Erin Osborne - Posted by: Erin Osbonre (Adult Day Program Staff) on: Jun 11, 2021

  • I loved getting to know Juta through my friend Karen. Whenever we wanted to know something about birds, nature, plants, Karen would ask her mom. She was a very strong and independent woman! She will be greatly missed. May your memories bring you comfort Karen, Jim and friends. Mona - Posted by: Mona (friend) on: Apr 28, 2021
