Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • I met Herb when I first started working. He asked for help with a few things and later on throughout the years he got me to help him with his rose garden. I didn’t know anything about growing and caring for rose bushes before but he taught me everything and I promised to maintain his garden. He was a great friend and I would always talk about the Winnipeg Jets with him and he shared many great stories about his childhood and growing up in the bushes. He was very involved in the Villa before his health declined and was a very charitable person. He will be missed but never forgotten. - Posted by: Bryce Perche (Friend) on: May 23, 2021

  • Got to meet Herb through my mother-in-law Rose as she would visit her mom at Tuxedo Villa, through her visits she got to know Herb and he became friends with her, then when Rose's mom passed away she kept visiting Herb and would help Herb with paying bills sending letters for Herb and organizing things for Herb, then I would always go pick up my mother-in-law from the Villa, then I became friends with him, we would chat sports as we both had a love for the Jets and Bombers. After Rose passed away I would still go visit him as we had a connection with sports. Herb would always ask how my sons were as he got to meet them as well I will very much miss him as I was not able to see him for the past year and a half because of covid, he always said he enjoyed my visits and I will never forget the last thing he said to me, he said please come visit me again soon, I really enjoy when you come, I think he just liked me bringing potato chips and my wifes baking. But I know he enjoyed my visits as I enjoyed visiting with him, Rest in peace my friend. - Posted by: Jack Swar (Friend ) on: May 14, 2021

  • I met Herb many years ago when my Grandma was in the villa. My mom Rose became friends with Herb and helped him with his Christmas cards, picked up his orders at Shoppers Drug Mart and helped with anything else he needed done. My kids would go along and visit. He always referred to our youngest son as the goalie! My husband would visit with Herb in person and on the phone and talk hockey and football! Every year he gave my mom a Shriners coffee mug. We all loved his stories, he will be missed. - Posted by: Kathy Swar (Friend) on: May 14, 2021

  • During the 16 years I lived in Winnipeg I met regularly with Herb and got to know him as my oldest cousin from my mother’s family. His family was always important to him and he spoke fondly about his sister, Doris, and their mother. He entered the Tuxedo Villa in the late 1970’s having been diagnosed with MS. Herb loved the Winnipeg Blue Bombers & Winnipeg Jets and attended many games. He was a proud Shriner and was often sitting at the entrance selling tickets, calendars and Christmas cakes. He was popular and always had a smile for anyone who visited him. The final years of my wife’s two grandmothers were at the Villa and my father-in-law always looked forward to his conversations with Herb at the same time. Herb was an honorable man who managed his disability with dignity spending over 40 years at the Tuxedo Villa. - Posted by: Lyndon Olson (Cousin (my mother - maiden name Ruth Olsen)) on: May 08, 2021

  • Many good memories of time spent, as a young man, with Elaine and Herb. Their home on St. Louis was always a welcoming place. Herb was a generous and humble man, a gifted craftsman who could fashion from wood, anything to which he'd put his mind. He was very proud of his Norwegian heritage. • Wishing Uncle Herb is at peace. He always thought of our family in such kind ways and those memories will last forever. A true faithful caring friend. - Posted by: Derrick Balzer (Family friend) on: May 01, 2021
