HUGH ALEXANDER BROWN
October 1, 1944 - April 28, 2021

After an undaunted battle with cancer Hugh passed away peacefully at St. Boniface Hospital on April 28, with his family by his side.
Hugh was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1944 to Arthur William Brown and Annie Louise Copeland. He was raised and went to school in Lac du Bonnet, Manitoba where he grew up "helping" with the family business in the Beaver Lumber yard. It was in Lac du Bonnet where he attained his passion for outdoorsmanship and forged life lasting friendships through sailing, paddling, fishing, swimming, skiing and camping on the Winnipeg River. He attended high school in Winnipeg at Elmwood High where he met his first love, Kyra Irwin, whom he later married in 1966. After receiving a drafting diploma from Red River College, he entered the workforce and spent his entire career with the Government of Manitoba as a municipal planner. Later, in his 40s, he acquired a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Manitoba while raising a family and working full time, in order to expand on his long and loyal career with the government from which he retired in 2004, after more than 35 years.
Widowed in 2006 Hugh found love again and was married to Carole Janik in 2012. He and Carole shared his passion for the cottage in Lac du Bonnet, travelling with family, and entertaining as they combined their lifetimes of wonderful relationships and family. During his last years Carole was ever loyal as she provided Hugh with tender, compassionate care as his health failed; care for which his family will be ever grateful.
Hugh was a voracious volunteer, volunteering notably with Scouts Canada, the University of Manitoba Alumni Association, and the Manitoba Theatre Centre, in addition to coaching neighbourhood hockey, soccer and baseball programs when his boys were young. Ever the relationship builder, Hugh was always at the ready to give a neighbourly hand when needed. Hugh embraced and enabled all of the activities his two boys could imagine without missing an opportunity to participate in any capacity. An accomplished marathon runner, he also competed in triathlons into his 60s and played league hockey into his 50s. Although he was a marginal skier and a terrible golfer, Hugh was always invited to share in the camaraderie. He will be remembered by all he touched for his warm smile, patience, and kind demeanor (and remembered as the one, true croquet and lawn dart champion by his dear Lac du Bonnet friends).
Beloved husband of Carole Janik; loving father of Scott (Christa) of Winnipeg, and Neil (Cat) of Bracebridge; brothers, Chris (Rachel) of Burlington and Allan (Deby Justice) of Dryden; loved grandfather of Alex, Andrea and Kyra. He was predeceased by his first wife Kyra (2006).
A memorial service and interment will be held September of 2022 with arrangements to be finalized and announced after COVID restrictions have been removed and large gatherings are once again safe.
