HEATHER POWELL
(TOZELAND)
November 28, 1946 - April 28, 2021

Mum was born and raised in River Heights in Winnipeg. She grew up spending summers at Falcon Lake at the cabin we all still cherish. Mum lived in residence and took nursing at St. Boniface Hospital. She graduated in 1967, with friends she'd stay in touch with for the rest of her life. Mum was 17 when she met Dad (George), her lifelong love. They married after Dad completed RCMP training and moved to Saskatchewan in 1968. In 1970 Kim was born in Maple Creek then on to Gravelbourg where Margo was born in 1972. They were also posted to Melfort and Yorkton, where Mum gathered friends in the community, Kinettes and Brownies. In 1981 we moved to Winnipeg and Mum was in her glory - time at the lake was standard once again.
Mum was fierce about two things - family and Falcon Lake. Both were her life source. They went hand in hand and she enjoyed them at every opportunity.
Mum was selfless to a fault - putting everyone else ahead of herself. She took care of her flock and had a very broad wingspan. She welcomed and tucked people under her wings. Mum demonstrated her kindness and care in infinite ways. Whether it was taking homemade soup to a friend who was ill or listening and supporting people as they navigated life's challenges, she was always there.
Mum was an RN and once in Winnipeg, worked on labour and delivery at Misericordia and then the Breast Screening Clinic. Mum gained dear friends and memories everywhere she went. She retired from nursing to take on her most favourite role, spending days with her grandchildren until they went off to school. Then she and Dad enjoyed travelling - through Europe, a Yangtze River cruise, Mexico, Finland and many more places.
Mum was creative. She made many special events more special by contributing her skills and warmth. Mom sewed her own wedding dress and her bridesmaids' dresses. She sewed grad dresses for both her girls and their best friends, the bridesmaid dresses for Kim's wedding and a number of outfits and Halloween costumes for grandkids. She was also creative with crafts: paper tole, cross-stitch, knitting, ceramics and so much more. She repurposed fur coats into teddy bears, and especially loved upcycling a loved one's fur into a cherished keepsake. Mum also repurposed wool sweaters into warm and wonderful mittens enjoyed by many. She knit dozens of scarves to donate to Siloam Mission or wrap around trees downtown for people who needed one. She used her sewing skills to produce dozens of masks last year and donated them to Margo's work. Mum was passionate about taking photos and is responsible for documenting our memories and life events.
Mum is survived by her loving husband and life partner of nearly 53 years, George, daughter Kim, son-in-law Ted, grandchildren, Mackenzie and Jackson, and daughter Margo, son-in-law Dwayne and bonus granddaughter Alexis. After Margo's 1989 exchange to Finland, Mum gained a third daughter when Mira (Jani and son Axel) joined our family. In addition, Mum is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, John and Judy Tozeland, niece Tami (Tom) and their children, Kieran, Ben and Lily and niece Sage (Theo). There are also oodles of friends who are left with the void she once filled. We can all rest assured that Mum had a large, passionate and loud welcome committee awaiting her arrival.
Mum, we weren't ready - and know you weren't either. We are confident you've been registering your dissatisfaction to anyone who will listen. There are no words. You've left a gaping hole that literally takes our breath away. You are loved more than words can say.
For those who choose, donations can be made to Alzheimer Society of Manitoba to support touch quilts or Southeast Whiteshell Fire Department.

Condolences & Memories (12 entries)

  • George, my deepest condolences to you and your family on the untimely passing of your beautiful wife Heather. I fondly remember all of our fun work parties when I worked in "D" Division. With much love and heartfelt prayers. - Posted by: Marianne Ratushniak Caine (Former co-worker of George) on: Jun 17, 2021

  • Dear George and family. We are so sad to hear about Heather's passing. It is hard to think of someone so vibrant being gone. She offered me a place to stay when Bob was transferred to Tisdale because he couldn't find housing there. This was especially important as I was 6 months pregnant. I enjoyed my stay with the both of you. There was never any shortage of laughter in your home. She was an amazing person... I know you will all miss her dreadfully. • Dear Margo and Family - I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your beautiful and loving mother, Heather. You are in my thoughts. - Posted by: Jeannie Alexander (Colleague of Margo) on: May 11, 2021

  • George - Neil and I were so very sorry to learn of Heather's passing. We have great memories of many shared evenings of fun and laughter, plus delicious meals Heather cooked for us whenever we were in town and able to get together. Her rum ribs recipe is still our all-time favourite. I met Heather in nurses training at St B; we were assigned seating side-by-side for the first 6 months, and then were often in the same cohort group on the wards. Her kindness and sense of humour are not forgotten. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. - Posted by: Carolyn McLean (friend and nursing student peer) on: May 09, 2021

  • Sending you all my deepest condolences. I know you will all miss her very deeply. Take care of one another. - Posted by: Laurie (Margo’s friend) on: May 09, 2021

  • My deepest sympathies to you and your family. I have many fond memories from the Yorkton days. She was always such cheerful person, her wonderful smile was so infectious. Heather was always there for you and she went the extra mile for anyone who needed a helping hand. Her passing has left a big void for so many. - Posted by: Bonnie Rees (Friend) on: May 09, 2021

  • Our hearts go out to your family on the loss of your beautiful, talented Mum. Deb and Brian - Posted by: Deb and Brian Roach (Friends) on: May 08, 2021

  • We met 57 years ago and have been buddies ever since. I will miss her smile and laughter and her willingness to try many things. - Posted by: Joan and Gary Watson (Nursing Fabfive) on: May 08, 2021

  • My condolences on your loss. I worked with Heather for a short time at Misericordia in the 80s. She made an impression on me as a young nurse with her humor and wisdom. I can recall several lessons that she taught me, all with fun and sincerity. I was actually thinking about her the other day. I loved her voice. It is not many people in life that you can remember specific conversations or the sound of their voices, but I remember her. Lovely beautiful lady. - Posted by: Kelly Seward (co worker) on: May 08, 2021

  • Dear George and Family, I am so sorry to hear of your wife and mother's passing. I am sending you my sympathies on behalf of my family and my husband Donald Gordon Powell, who passed in 2006. Family, above all else, was the most important thing to Don. Don was the youngest son of Norman and Peggy Powell who lived in Vancouver. Norman was one of Charlie's older brothers. My heart and thoughts are with you all. Deanna Powell (Kamloops) - Posted by: Deanna Powell (cousin-in-law) on: May 08, 2021

  • I am so very sorry to learn of your Mum's passing. I had the honour of meeting your parents when you lived in Prince Albert, and they came this way with your niece and nephew at the skatepark. She was a spitfire, and had this ready for adventure spirit. I think you have that as well. She was a really lovely woman, and her memory will live on forever. May the Good Lord walk you through this loss and help you all to know that she is in a far better place and will be with you at all times. Sending a virtual hug to you all. - Posted by: Connie Faye Farber (Friend) on: May 08, 2021

  • Mrs. Powell was like a second mom to me. I have so many wonderful memories spent with the Powell family. My love of cross stitch and attempts at knitting were supported by Mrs. Powell. She had the patience of a saint. She was also an amazing cook. I was and still am a lover of many of her “sippy sippy” appetizers and cherish the recipe cards that I use regularly. Love you Mrs. Powell. - Posted by: Jodie Kehl (4th daughter? ) on: May 08, 2021
