BARRY WAYNE PRENTICE

It is with great sadness that the family of Barry Wayne Prentice announce their beloved husband, father and grandfather, died Sunday, May 23, 2021, at the age of 82.
Barry was born on September 1, 1938, in Souris, Manitoba to Hazel and William (Bill) Prentice. After graduating high school in Souris, Barry departed for Winnipeg where he enrolled in the University of Manitoba to pursue a civil engineering degree. His graduation from the University of Manitoba led Barry to a long career with the Manitoba Highways Department that advanced from "bush assignment" in remote regions of northern Manitoba, to residencies in Dauphin, Lac Du Bonnet, Boissevain and ending as the Regional Director in Steinbach.
After retiring, Barry spent several more years in Steinbach, spending time with extended family at the family cabin in Sandy Lake. A recent move into Winnipeg provided an opportunity to be closer to family and events such as the Winnipeg Symphony, where he embraced a lifelong passion for classical music as a season ticket holder.
In virtually all of the locations along his journey, Barry was an active member of local charity and volunteer organizations, most notably the Pat Porter Active Living Centre and Lions Club where he held various offices. In Steinbach, a favorite activity was coordinating and participating in the "cook-out" events preparing hot dogs or pancakes for local businesses and their guests.
Barry is mourned by his loving wife Ellenor; children, Michael (Kim) and Susan; three adoring grandchildren, Megan, Avery and Madison.
Barry was predeceased by his sister Donna.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Barry's honor to the Pat Porter Active Living Centre (https://www.patporteralc.com/fundraising/).
Given current circumstances, there will be no memorial service but a Celebration of Life will be arranged by the family at a later date.
Condolences for the family may be left at www.alternacremation.ca.

  • Sorry to hear of Barry passing. Condolences are extended to Eleanor and Family. - Posted by: Bill & Bernice Petras (Friend) on: Jun 12, 2021

  • My deepest sympathies to Eleanor and family on the loss of your wonderful Barry. I appreciated his humor and knowledge as we visited at work events or when we'd get together at your place for crab appetizers. - Bev Friesen, RM of Hanover - Posted by: Bev Friesen (Friend) on: Jun 01, 2021

  • Ellenor, Our Condolences to you and your family. Barry was friend and classmate at U of M and was wonderful roommate with Cece and myself during our 3rd and 4th year. Enjoyed the times you and Barry joined us to celebrate our 40th and 50th year anniversary reunions in Winnipeg. Don Lamb, Civil Engineering Class 1960 - Posted by: Don Lamb (Classmate) on: May 31, 2021

  • Barry, Don Lamb and I were roommates as engineering students and for some years after graduation. Our careers took us in different directions, but my deep respect for Barry remained. I am saddened by his passing. Cece Dawley. - Posted by: Cece Dawley (Friend from the past) on: May 31, 2021

  • We have known Barry for some 20 years while he was in Boissevain, employed by the Highways Department. He was a well known and well liked and will be missed by all he knew. We again met Barry when he and Ellenor during a visit to "The Waverley" senior home, but unfortunately our short get together was cut short due to COVID 19. Our thoughts and prayers to Ellenor and all the family. - Posted by: Elaine/Gordon Holmes (Friend) on: May 30, 2021

  • Saddened to hear of Barry's passing. He was my boss through the mid '70's while I was in the Melita sub office and I could not have had one better - cool, calm and thoughtful. My condolences to Ellie and family. - Posted by: Chuck Lund (MB. HWYS, Ret'd.) on: May 29, 2021

  • I would like to express my sincere condolences to Ellie and the family. I was fortunate enough to have had Barry as a board member at the PPALC. I have many fond memories of him, like when I convinced him to dress up as Santa for our “seniors with Santa” pictures, and having him cook for our Rib fall supper. I have missed having him and Ellie come to the PPALC since they moved to Winnipeg, but am glad that he got to spend his later years closer to his family, which was evident were everything to him. I feel blessed to have known him as he was kind and genuine. Most of all I will miss his hugs, and the occasional kiss on the forehead. - Posted by: Carrie (Staff at PPALC) on: May 29, 2021
