ACHIM (ARCHIE) WERNER RIEDEL
April 11, 1935 - May 27, 2021
He leaves to mourn his wife Judy, of 35 years, son Bryan (Vanessa) Plante, daughter Larissa (Keith) Prairie, grandchildren, Alyssa, Lucas, Julia and Makayla. He also leaves his family in Germany, his only sibling Barbara Gerth, nephews, Arno, Achim and niece Antje (Friedrich Ebrecht) Gerth, great- nephew Thimo, cousins, Rebecca (Juergen) Guthart, Waltraud Riedel, Robert (Marina) Riedel and their family. Achim was predeceased by his parents, Hans Joachim (1941) and Hildegard Riedel (unknown).
Achim was born in Breslau, Germany, weighing in at just over two pounds, kept warm in a drawer next to the wood stove. With the tragic loss of his father during the Second World War, was an orphan in a boys' school, when his aunt and uncle rescued this "energetic" five year boy and cultivated his gardening, cooking and hard work ethic. He left East Germany with mere pennies and taking a boat trip to Canada in 1957, buying a train ticket to British Columbia and making a temporary forever stop in Winnipeg, all shaped the irreplaceable Archie that became the love of our life.
Archie worked for Arnold Brothers Transport, was a Unit Assistant and Geriatric Coordinator at HSC for many years and after retirement worked at River City Carwash. Archie's passions were: family, photography, animals (especially Arko, the only private owner dog to work for the Winnipeg Police Force), Boy Scouts, baking, cooking and being active every moment of the day.
A special thank you to Dr. R. Bard, Urologist at HSC, who guided us through Acute Care and Comfort Care, and the staff on GA5.
As per Archie's wishes, cremation has taken place. Archie's funeral and interment was held on Friday, June 4, 2021.
He fought bladder cancer long and hard. But ultimately another cancer took him from us.
In lieu of flowers, we ask donations to be made to Scouts Manitoba or plant a tree, any type of tree and it can be planted anywhere.
Our Bumblebee has left our hive.

I will miss Archie. I met him at the Winnipeg South Photo Club and since we both lived in Riverview, I would pick him up every Wednesday evening as he was no longer allowed to drive at night. Archie lived a long and useful life after overcoming the loss of parents and surviving WWII. He then made the courageous decision to escape the DDR while doing his military service, went to West Germany and then found his way to Winnipeg. He served many years as a leader with Scouts Canada and did important work in the health care system. He spent some years in the wedding photo biz. He was an excellent photographer with many awards and an interesting and interested member of both the Manitoba and South Winnipeg Photo Clubs. We shared our common German background and war experience but as he was 10 when the war ended and I was 3, he shared a lot of information with me. We loved to go on photography field trips together and he was a mentor to me as he had a lot more photographic experience. At our last Zoom meeting for the 1920-21 year of the Winnipeg South Photo Club we ended the meeting with a Photoshare. Our past President started the Photo Share with the 3 photos of Archie that I had taken in 2019 when we were hunting the Prairie crocus at Rosser Cemetery and Arden Manitoba. The photoshare gave me the opportunity to talk a little about Archie, his background and his photography and our past president introduced the 3 photos of Archie with his camera taking photos of crocuses by saying these photos showed Archie "Doing what he loved" which was such an appropriate comment.
