WAYNE ALLISON VAN HORNE

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our wonderful husband, father and grandfather, Wayne Allison Van Horne, on July 26, 2021.
Wayne was born on September 10, 1940 in Winnipeg, where he lived his entire life. Wayne had a great sense of humour and was kind, generous, loving, and compassionate to all.
Left to mourn are his wife of 57 years, Donna, his four children, Paul (Sylvia), Laura (Peter), Christopher and Scott (Ally), his nine grandchildren, Connor, Sage, Simon, Sienna, Jasper, Max, Julian, Skylar and Charlie, his cousin Don McLean (wife Donna), and his dear friends John and Sylvia Millner, along with extended family, countless patients, colleagues and friends.
Wayne was a dedicated and much loved family physician at the Assiniboine Clinic and Grace Hospital for 44 years. He received his science, masters and doctor of medicine degree at University of Manitoba. Wayne's passion was spending time with his family at the beautiful lake house he built in Lake of the Woods, Ontario. He also loved downhill skiing and travelling.
A very sincere thank you to our palliative team and Dr. Johan Raubenheimer.
In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Grace Hospital Foundation in Wayne's name.
A celebration of Wayne's life will take place later this year.

Condolences & Memories (22 entries)

  • I lived on Dominion Street from 1945 to 1956. I went to Wolsely School with Wayne, Gerry Bristow and Rich Rummery. We biked the monkey trails at Omens Creek and played cany-can in the backlanes. His mom made the greatest natural brine dill pickles. I walked by his home, right next to Portage, everytime I did grocery shopping for my mom, or took the street car downtown. I have fond memories of Wayne, and am very impressed with his life history. My sympathy to all members of his family. - Posted by: David Knowles (childhood friend) on: Sep 04, 2021

  • Wayne was our family physician for years and encouraged me to do the RN program at the Grace when I was 50 yrs old. Sincere condolences to the family. He was one of a kind. - Posted by: Judith Hodgson (former patient) on: Aug 13, 2021

  • Our sincere condolences to the family. We were so fortunate to have Dr. Van Horne as our doctor for so many years. We first met him when he was making a house call to our neighbour's son to see how he was doing after his surgery. We couldn't have asked for a more caring & thorough doctor. He & his assistant Cathy were a great team. - Posted by: Darlene & Terry Smith (Patients) on: Aug 10, 2021

  • Wayne and my Father Charlie had a long history together. From meeting at the Labatt retail store. Dad became a lifelong patient. And Wayne looked after dad like family and continued on with my mother after dad's passing. He was my doctor up until his retirement, and a great confidant, I loved playing rugby with his son. Heaven has received a wonderful angel, and I am sure Mom, Dad and countless others welcomed him. I am truly sad to have heard this today. Hugs to the family. - Posted by: Charles Ward (Friend and Patient) on: Aug 09, 2021

  • My condolences to Donna and the family. Dr. Van Horne was my doctor for the longest time. He was also a family friend of my parents Charlie (1992) Hilda (2020) Ward. I know Donna new my mom as well. Dr. Van Horne and I both shared the same birthday September 10 and always remember to wish one another a happy birthday. I can still see him driving up our driveway in his orange little convertible and thought how did that big man get out of that car lol. I have wonderful memories. May he rest in peace. - Posted by: Charlne Purcell (Patient and friend) on: Aug 09, 2021

  • I was saddened to read about the passing of Dr. Van Horne. I remember him as my family’s doctor back in the 70s at Assiniboine clinic. He was always so kind and took time to listen. My condolences to your family at this time. - Posted by: Teresa Phillips (Ex patient) on: Aug 08, 2021

  • Dr. Van Horne was my GP decades ago and delivered my two children, now in their 40s. I always appreciated his friendly, personable manner. He had a way of making me (and I'm sure every patient) feel that I was heard and was special. That's a great gift for a physician. - Posted by: Linda Rodgers (former patient) on: Aug 08, 2021

  • I was raised in Winnipeg but immigrated to the States about 50 years ago. Wayne and Donna were in a circle of friends in the 60s who had dinner parties, socialized in general, and went in ski trips to Sunshine. Several of the other guys were CAs and I don’t recall if their association was through a mutual friend. Regardless, we had great fun times back then. I was also an OR nurse at the Grace, so occasionally interacted with Wayne professionally. He was a wonderful, kind, unpretentious doctor and friend to nurses. His patients loved him for his compassion and caring. I know he was greatly admired by all who worked with him at the Assiniboine Clinic. BTW: I had no idea he delivered babies too, but I guess GPs did that in those days! Wayne and Donna were a perfect pairing and I am very pleased to hear of their 54 year successful marriage and his pride in his 4 children. Donna, my sincere condolences to you and your family. Wayne left such a positive footprint on this world. In your grief, you have much of which to be proud. • I worked along side Dr. Van Horne for over 30 years at the clinic. He was the best boss one could ever ask for and a better friend in that I asked him to give a toast to the bride at my wedding. He was a kind, gentle, a patient man and his patients all loved him. He adored Donna, was an incredible father and the grandchildren were the apple of his eye. Thanks for the great memories Wayne. I love you and will miss you. Cathy & Tony Mariani - Posted by: Cathy Mariani (Wayne's assistant at the clinic) on: Aug 07, 2021

  • Wayne was my father’s doctor for many, many years. Wayne’s father was one of my dad’s best friend, that was when their association began. My dad knew Wayne from the time he was a medical student. Wayne was a wonderful doctor and great friend to my mom and dad. Rest In Peace Wayne. - Posted by: Linda Nazer (Father’s doctor and friend ) on: Aug 07, 2021

  • Wayne was my family doctor for almost 4 decades until I left Winnipeg. He was always very caring, concerned and patient. I also worked at Grace Hospital as an RN and found him to be a very caring person when it came to his patients. RIP Wayne. - Posted by: Pat Scott (Former patient) on: Aug 07, 2021

  • My thoughts are with Donna and family. Wayne was not only our neighbour but our family doctor for almost 30 years. Wayne delivered our daughter who always knew if she'd been a boy she would have been raised by the Van Horne's! One of the nicest doctors I've ever met! - Posted by: Adele Deegan (Former patient and neighbor) on: Aug 07, 2021

  • My condolences to your family on the passing of Dr. Van Horne. I was a patient of his for about 45 years. He was the greatest doctor ever. So caring and concerned. He even delivered my son 45 years ago. And he was a great family man. I would ask him about his kids and he was all too happy to tell me of their education and where they were living at the time. Blessings to you all. - Posted by: Judy Anaka (Patient at Assiniboine Clinic) on: Aug 07, 2021

  • It is with shock and great sadness we read that Wayne has passed. "Wonderful Wayne," as we knew him, was our family doctor for many years. His keen eye, magical medical intuition, sharp mind, care and empathy were core to his being as was his ready smile and warmth. Donna and family, we are holding a thought for you all.
