MILDRED BUELOW
1928 - 2021
With immense sadness we share the passing of our beloved wife and mother, Mildred Buelow (nee Finlan). She remains within the hearts of her husband of almost 63 years, Alfred, her beloved only child Louise and son-in-love, Eric.
She is survived by her siblings, Patrick (Mary) Finlan, Annie Lacroix and Lila (Ed) Rokosh. She will also be remembered with love and affection by many nieces and nephews.
Her life was spent in Winnipeg with childhood times spent in Beausejour and adult life in Matlock, Ponemah and exploring the Red River and Lake Winnipeg on the Siesta and MS Carodon.
She was an excellent seamstress and knitter and readily shared these talents with her friends and family but found her happiest times when entertaining and using a new recipe out of her extensive library. The horse race parties will be missed!
She tended her gardens at home and the lake, and every year there were geraniums and shared beautiful peony bouquets from family heirloom plants.
She was strong, determined, smart, beautiful and oh so loved - we will miss her.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the CNIB where she volunteered for many years as a reader for audio books and helped sight impaired students with their studies. Donations would also be appreciated to Manitoba Harvest - no one should ever leave the table hungry, and no one ever did from hers!
And, just at the moment when someone says, "There, she is gone,"
there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices
ready to take up the glad shout,
"Here she comes!"

Mildred and I never met face-to-face, at least not that I can remember, but we had a lively telephone relationship: I was the secretary to her husband at Manitoba Hydro for a time back in the early 1980s. When I was first interviewed for the job, Alf made it clear to me that when Mildred called, he would come running. I had no idea how literal that description was, but he really did come running when I announced "the wife" was on the phone. It didn't matter what meeting he was in, what work he was doing, when she called, I was to interrupt anyone, anything, everything to bring him to that call. It was, frankly, adorable. I sure enjoyed those calls. She had such a sharp wit, and, of course, their devotion to one another was enchanting. They were blessed. There's no doubt about it. It's many years since Mildred's passing and I've only just come upon this obituary now so who knows if anyone will even take note of it, but for the record, she was a lovely lady with a wonderful voice who always had time to be gracious and witty with a lowly secretary. And they had a love that is memorable even forty years after I got to witness it, albeit only via phone conversations (well, and Alf racing across the office to get to the phone). - Posted by: Joanne (nee) Harley (Secretary) on: Oct 06, 2023
