REV. KATHRYN THORNTON
1935 – 2021

Kathryn passed away on August 13, 2021, from pancreatic cancer.
Kathryn was born in the district of Hanover, near Steinbach, Manitoba. Her parents were Peter F. Wiebe and Maria Unger. She received her early education in rural schools and then studied at the University of Winnipeg and St. Andrew's College, Saskatoon.
Kathryn taught school in rural Manitoba and Winnipeg before entering theology training, leading to her ordination as a United Church minister. This was followed by training in hospital chaplaincy. She worked for a while as a chaplain at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg. Afterwards, she moved to Montreal and became Director of Pastoral Care at Montreal General Hospital.
After retirement, Kathy and her husband, Denis, spent six years in Northern Ireland, where Denis emigrated from in 1957. They returned to Canada in 2007.
Kathy leaves to mourn her passing husband of 62 years, Denis; sons, Evan (Sylvia), Duncan (Brenda) and Tom (Shannon); grandchildren, Petra, Evana, Sebastian and Katya; and great-grandson William; brothers, Abe (Adeline) and Peter (Rosemary); sisters, Mary (Raymond) and Betty (the late Reuben), and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial service will be set at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Assiniboine Park Conservatory in Kathy's name.

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • Denis - my most sincere condolences on the passing of your wife Kathryn - I just saw the news in our UCC regional newsletter. It's been many years since the two of your were in Montreal but I still recall her radiant smile and gentle manner. I often heard how much she was appreciated at as hospital chaplain. I have no doubt she impacted many lives. Take care dear Denis. Paula Kline (Montreal City Mission) Please share my comment with Denis. I am fine with having my contact information shared. - Posted by: Paula Kline (Former colleague of Denis in Montreal ) on: Nov 15, 2023

  • I am so sorry to hear of Kathy’s death. She was a such a special person — the kind of person that many, I am sure, remember as a sympathetic ear, a sensitive listener, and smart and insightful conversationalist. My condolences to Denis, Evan and Duncan and the rest of your families. - Posted by: Lynette Reid (Old friend of the family ) on: Aug 20, 2021

  • I was shocked to see Kathy's obituary and saddened to see that cancer of the pancreas was the cause. She didn't deserve that! I met Kathy through her sister, Lydia and I always enjoyed our times together. The world has lost another beautiful soul and I send my sincerest condolences to Denis, Duncan, Evan and families. - Posted by: Jackie Cantin (Friend) on: Aug 20, 2021

  • Dennis, Helen and I were sad to read of Kathy's passing. We appreciate that she is now with the Lord - but you are in our thoughts too as you walk this new path without Kathy. We have many happy memories of earlier days, especially the years at WBC. Right now, we both pray that 'the God of all comfort will comfort you'. Words are so inadequate but Helen and I are praying for you and your family at this time. Shadow land (Lyrics © Ed Hughes, Canada, 2020) Melody. Summertime. (Porgy and Bess) G. Gershwin. Shadow land Hearts are heavy and breakin’ Valley’s dark Black clouds above Sobbin’ sighs Only prayer we’re makin’ Sayin’ goodbye To one we love. Glory land Arms are stretched out in welcome Bright faces, sayin’ “Glad you are here.” No more pain No more sorrow or cryin’ There, in the Father’s house of cheer. In a while I’ll be makin’ that journey ‘Cross the river To the peaceful shore You and me Together forever Won’t ever say Goodbye no more. - Posted by: edward Duncan Hughes (Former fellow-student) on: Aug 17, 2021

  • A short message to share my condolences to the family and friends. Although I did not know Kathryn personally, what I know of Evan leads me to believe that I would have liked his Mom as well. - Posted by: Desneiges Brunette (Friend/colleague of Evan's) on: Aug 17, 2021
