KATHLEEN BRENDA PETERSON
(nee PINKERTON)
May 16, 1945 - August 15, 2021

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Kathy, our dear wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, on August 15, 2021.
Kathy will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 53 years, Jack, son John Peterson (Kathy McNamara); daughter Jane Van Massenhoven (John); her six grandsons, Sam, Riley, Isaac and Kale Peterson and Blake and Luke Van Massenhoven; nephews, Brad Pinkerton (Kelly) and children, Hayden and Callie; Gord Taylor (Nicole Jaman); and so many close and wonderful friends. Kathy was predeceased by her parents, George and Brenda Pinkerton; her brother John Pinkerton and sister-in-law Carol Taylor.
Kathy was a classy, kind and loyal person who cared deeply for her family and friends and who treated people with respect. Whether she was hosting an event at home, volunteering for a cause, working with clients or spending time with family, friends and neighbours she always put her best self forward to ensure a positive experience for all. Over the years, she and Jack had many adventures including purchasing properties, building homes, cottages and businesses, and enjoying time at Clearwater Bay, Montserrat and Manzanillo. Kathy's careers included librarian, teacher, office manager, and banking. Through these adventures, she made many long-lasting friendships and left a positive impression on all she met. Her smile and positive attitude would instantly brighten a room. She was especially proud of her family and could always be counted on for gentle guidance when needed. Her grandsons especially brought her great joy and she loved hearing about their latest adventures and could be counted on for homework help at a moment's notice. She will be missed by all who knew her.
The family would like to thank Dr. Kim and Dr. Ogaranko and all the nurses and staff at the Buhler Cancer Centre at the Victoria General Hospital for her care over the last 20 months. We would also like to thank Dr. Sheila Domke for her years of compassionate care for Kathy. To the entire Palliative Care team at Riverview Health Centre we thank you for your compassion towards Kathy and her family in her final days. Thank-you to the Silver Heights IDA Pharmacy for your kindness and compassion, and to the members of the Rotary Club of Winnipeg for your understanding and fellowship.
A Celebration of Life ceremony will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to CancerCare Manitoba or to a charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • Student council President, scholar, athlete and girlfriend to my high school best friend Jack. We spent a lot of time together then and both were great friends. Jack my condolence to you and your family. I know you will stay strong. You were both leaders and Kathy will be missed. Brian - Posted by: Brian Bell (friend) on: Sep 11, 2021

  • Kathy and I met 60 years ago, in Grade 10 at St. James Collegiate. I was drawn to her wry sense of humour and outgoing personality. Her spontaneity led to many adventures – in school, working at the library and enjoying a wide circle of friends. Of our many adventures, I particularly remember Kathy’s decision that we should wallpaper her bedroom. This was before pre-pasted wallpaper and we collapsed in hysterics in a wet, gluey mess, with the paper falling off the wall faster than we could put it up. I was thrilled to be a bridesmaid at Kathy and Jack’s wedding and have long since forgiven Kathy for the bridesmaid dress. We shared the joy and sorrow of our pregnancies and rejoiced in our children. After moving to Vancouver, my visits to Winnipeg always included a lovely dinner at Woodgreen. Our connections since have been more sporadic but no less meaningful. In my mind, I will always see Kathy’s wonderful smile, hear her unique laugh and her special voice. - Posted by: Carol Jones (Friend) on: Sep 10, 2021

  • Kathy, dear friend of our University years, of carefree summer trips, of time spent with you, Jack and your two children, John and Jane, of cottage and Toronto visits: so much happiness. You were the centre of so many events: ever gracious, ever welcoming of us into your world. It is diminished by your absence, but memories of you will enrich us ever. Rest in peace, dear and noble friend, after your long and valiant struggle. Love always, Anne and George Kanert - Posted by: Anne and George Kanert (Friends since University; George was Best Man at Kathy and Jack's wedding) on: Aug 30, 2021

  • Our sincere condolences to Jack, John, Jane and their families. May you find comfort in treasuring the memories of Kathy. Kathy was a genuine friendly lady and a very knowledgeable banker who offered advice on many levels. Her kindred spirit will be missed. • We will always remember Kathy's fantastic dinner creations, with Jack's help with the wine. She always kept the conversations lively and opinionated. Usually during the course of the evening Kathy would mention what her grand kids were up to, which ended up with us smiling knowing how proud she was of them. Kathy will be greatly missed but never forgotten. Our condolences to Jack and family. - Posted by: Paul and Jackie Wilkes (Friends) on: Aug 22, 2021

  • Our heartfelt sorrow & love to Kathy’s family. She & Jack were dear friends. Kathy was a wonderful Woodgreen neighbor, (we shared a sip of sherry on many an afternoon when our kids were in school), a dear friend across borders, a fantastic cottage hostess, (I can’t help but remember a water logged Jeanne’s cake!!) and foremost, we shared our love for our families and mutual friends. Our hearts grieve! Rick & Patti & family - Posted by: Patti Palahniuk (Dear friend) on: Aug 22, 2021

  • Dear Jack and family - Please know that you and Kathy are in my prayers. You and Kathy were wonderful friends and I am sorry we don't get to see each other as much these days. If there is anything that I can do for you at this trying time please do not hesitate to call on me. I will be there just as you and Kathy were when I lost Harvey. Please take care.
