ROBERT NICHOLAS KUSHNER
April 29, 1953 - September 1, 2021
"For everything there is a season,
A time to be born and a time to die."
Left to cherish his memory are his mother Mary (nee Durban); sister Cheryl Chartrand (Jeff); beloved nephews and nieces, Brad Chartrand (Elizabeth), Tracey Vrecko (Quincy), Renee Langrell (Darryl), Micah Chartrand (Sheena) and their children. He was predeceased by his father Stephen. Robert was a second father to Cheryl's family and loved them unconditionally. He was always on hand to drive them to school, sports activities, concerts, etc and pet sit. The great-grandnieces and nephews knew they could always find a special treat awaiting them from "Uncle Rob", loonies and toonies were favourites! Robert was blessed with a lifelong childhood friend Ken Friess (Joan and family). The two were always able to share laughs and commiserate over life's ups and downs. Close neighbours and the Portage la Prairie Ukrainian community were also a major gift in his life.
Robert attended John Taylor Collegiate and graduated from Red River College with a degree in Fisheries. He was employed by Canada Safeway and the St. James Assiniboia School Division No. 2. His colleagues always spoke highly of him and respected his strong work ethic.
Robert was a private man who enjoyed his solitude. He was most at peace when he was outdoors and experiencing nature's beauty. In his latter years he developed a love of gardening and enjoyed exploring new plant species. He also developed a flair for cooking and was always interested in trying new spices and recipes. All who knew him will attest to his quick wit and knowledge on a wide range of subjects. He was a great fan of "Jeopardy" and we always marvelled at how he knew all the answers well before the contestants!
Most importantly, Robert was a man of deep faith. We, the family, are consoled knowing he is free of life's trappings and at rest with his God.

I first met Bob in February of 69 when I moved From Sault Ste Marie. I was the new kid. I remember Bob looking out for me!! Worked with him at Safeway and could he slug Skids of milk. Rob's passing meant deep sadness but also presented a flood of memories. Like playing army men in the bushes between his house and Mrs. Good's house with guns we made out of wood scraps. Of going to school together from Crestview elementary, to Ness Junior High, to John Taylor Collegiate, or hanging out with John Larkin. Dear Mrs. Kushner, Cheryl & Jeff & family, How very sad to hear of Rob's passing. Rob was a special friend of my family and certainly with my brother John. John always was happy to see Rob and as friends and neighbours, Rob was a big part of our families life. I remember one evening, when Rob and John were on summer holidays from school and were laying on the lawn outside our home singing. It was late and the stars were out and they were both just having the time of their life just singing their hearts out. So maybe, tonight if we look to the stars and hear some young voices singing . . . it might just be Rob & John trying out for the heavenly choir. Our hearts are broken with the loss of Rob, but remember it is Heaven's gain. Our deepest sympathies . . .
