Left to celebrate his life are his wife and partner in life Helen Whetter; sister Donna McCann (David Thomas and Nicola, Wes, Seth, Kate, Ross, Tamala, Sebastian, Jillian, Rob); niece Andrea (Peter, Justin); nephew James; nephew Michael (Sandi, Kade, Calyssa, Jenelle); his McCann/Randall family; Helen's family, Bruce Ormiston (Marlene Wong), Tom (Kristen, Sam, Charlie), Jill Faber (Jon, Jonah, Annika, Declan), Karen Edwards (Tyler, Harrison, Emma, Phoebe), Jane Manness (Stuart), Angela Cormier (Darren, Tyler, Luc, Mary, William), Peter (Kristina, Madison), Betsy, David (Meghan, Payton, Brynn, Harper) and many friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Alfred McCann, Rose Randall McCann and his brother Bryan (Val).
After his career with Family Services of Manitoba, the call of the outdoors found Les patrolling the bluebird boxes and the original prairie along the Headingley Grand Trunk Trail, hiking the Birdtail Trail in Riding Mountain National Park, canoeing the Maskwa River with the Gray Hares, cross country skiing in Beaudry Park, or attending a Nature Manitoba indoor meeting, sharing his love of nature with family and friends. He worked with youth groups, Bridging the Gap and the Headingley 4-H Outdoor Living Program, which appreciated his passion for nature as well.
His early years in the Wolseley area with his family were when he began his lifelong connection to Broadway First Baptist Church. He started school in this area as well and continued to support the school and community activities of his niece and nephews. Celebrating his birthdays with his niece Andrea were special occasions. Nephew James recalls that uncle Les often took him on camping trips, road trips and vacations in his old Volkswagen camper van throughout Canada and the USA. What he will remember most fondly, were the long evenings his uncle spent at his bedside watching over him as he recovered from cancer.
For 30 years he and Helen have enjoyed the changing of the seasons in Headingley. This time of year his enjoyment of sharing food and entertainment drew them to picnics and concerts in Assiniboine Park at the Lyric Theatre, to as many pavilions as possible at Folklorama and to a full tour of Fall Suppers. Through the seasons he has continued to raconteur and spin tales over lunch with the Outlook Club.
Sincere appreciation to all who called, sent cards, emailed, visited and shared "incredible" times during this last year. Thank you to Dr. Lipschitz, Dr. Ahmed and to Dr. Woelk and the Southern Health Palliative Care Team for their amazing comfort care and for making it possible for Les to stay at home, observe the birds at the feeder, listen to his vinyls with a cup of jasmine tea and watch the geese tip their wings as they too continued their onward journey.
A memorial service will be held at Broadway First Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. on October 6, 2021, conducted by Rev. Cathy Maxwell of St. Charles Headingley United Church and will be live streamed on YouTube. An earlier interment service at Avonlea Cemetery, Domain, Manitoba will be conducted by Rev. James DeBeer. Both services will be family services, following COVID-19 regulations of masking, social distancing and requiring double vaccinations.
Donations may be made in Les's memory to the Headingley Grand Trunk Trail, Nature Manitoba or to an organization of your choice.

Our sympathies to Helen and all of the family. Les will be missed by so many in the community. He shared his passion and knowledge for the outdoors with so many of our 4-H members and parents. My condolences to Helen, the family and friends of Les. I first met Les when I served on the board of the MNS when he was president. I was fortunate to spend time with him on many hiking trails and a trip across Quetico. I enjoyed our discussions on the long car rides to and from the trailheads. Dear Helen, so many people will miss Les. I knew him as a cyclist with Grey Hares but mainly as a group leader for some hikes for Nature Manitoba. During his hike leadership, I always felt safe and watched over. He took excellent care over his flock as we walked in the wilderness. Condolences to Les's family and to his many, many friends and fans. I feel very lucky to have had the pleasure of spending a little bit of time over the years with Les on trips he organized hiking, cycling, and canoeing. This time last year we met again as he was zipping along the grand trunk trail on a fall evening bike ride. Can't quite believe that a year later he is gone... I had belonged to Les' family for a week in summer in 2015, as a chaperone in a home-stay program for Japanese high school students. Both Les and Helen showed me how giving people were like. My poor English must have confused Helen and Les a lot through a week in my stay. But the words he had given to me were "Good!", "Fine!", "Absolutely!", "Exactly!", and "Marvelous!". And every act she showed me was the one for other people who were in bad condition in society. It was Helen and Les who made me realize how a person should take actions for others. I've appreciated Les and Helen for these six years. I imagine how deep sorrow Helen feels. My condolences Helen on the loss of Les, such a gentle and kind person. He had a way of being present, unobtrusively, yet there with you. I can imagine Les skiing at Beaudry. Les encouraged me to continue skiing, and I am grateful for that. He did come a few times to St Matthew Maryland, and how good it was to see him there.
