DONALD CLARE MCINNES
1929 - 2021

Donald Clare McInnes of Winnipeg, Manitoba, passed away peacefully Saturday, September 25, 2021 at the age of 92 at the St. Boniface Hospital.
He was predeceased by his parents, son Gordon Clare, wife Julia and daughter Sandra Claire. He is survived by daughters, Mary McInnes (Robert Graham), Donelda (Peter Straker), and Margaret (Jeffrey McConnell); Sandra's spouse Lance Rozecki; Christine McInnes (Steven Campbell); grandchildren, Beth, Jacob, Alex, Malcolm, Elliot, Kailyn, Morgan, Bryce, and Harriet; great-granddaughter Willow, sister Elaine Finnbogason, and brother Gordon McInnes.
Donald was born in Winnipeg on June 15, 1929 to Alfred Clare and Janet Donelda McInnes, the eldest of three. He studied at University of Manitoba, and tried his hand at business, but decided that wasn't for him. He changed paths and followed his father's footsteps and studied dentistry at the University of Toronto. During his university days, he joined the Delta Upsilon (DU) Fraternity, remaining an active member throughout his life. After graduating he returned to Winnipeg and joined his father's dental practice in 1958.
On September 17, 1960 he married Julia Ann Morgan Harris. He raised his family in Winnipeg and at Lake of the Woods.
Don was actively involved in the community. He had a wide variety of interests that ranged from sports, the arts, clubs, and societies. Curling, hunting and fishing, Gyro International Club, St. Andrews, Robbie Burns, Simmental Association and Salvation Army to name a few. Along with his father and brother was a longtime supporter of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He was a great supporter of the local arts including Rainbow stage, MTC, and the Manitoba Opera. In addition, he was an active member of Westminster United Church throughout his life.
Donald was a wonderful host. He enjoyed entertaining friends and cooking whenever he could. He took great pleasure in having friends and family around him both in the city, at the Lake and during his travels. The cottage was where he was happiest. His favourite pastimes were cocktails around the drinking stone, saunas and taking everyone for a cruise in his old wood boat, the Idylees. Don and Julie travelled extensively, always met new people and made friends wherever they went until COVID finally stopped his adventures.

Dad, Grandpa, Uncle Don, D.C., Doc
you will be missed by all.

We would like to thank the entire staff of St. Boniface Hospital for providing care and comfort under the most extraordinary circumstances to our beloved 'Benevolent Despot'.
In lieu of flowers, consider a donation to the charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • From about 1978 to 1993 I was a patient of Dr. McInnes’. He was always so pleasant and helpful and made it a treat going to what many consider dreadful. That would be enough to post on his obituary page but there is one unforgettable story I’d like to share. In 1993 I found a job in Vancouver and organized a going away weekend party with close friends. I recall it being quite full of people so it must have been around 8 or 9 pm when there was a knock on the door and in walks Dr. Don. I couldn’t believe it. He went far out of his way to drop by and wish me well. He didn’t stay long but that effort and selflessness has stuck with me for over 30 years which is why I searched out his name tonight and sadly came across his obituary. I’ve never forgotten him. He was a damn good man. - Posted by: Kevin Barclay (Patient ) on: Jan 31, 2023

  • Don was our family dentist for many years, and my first dentist ongoing until his retirement. I always enjoyed seeing him- with his affable presence, warm smile and questions about the family. From time to time we would also bump into each other in Kenora on the streets, Safeway or before Don hopped into his Donzi! One of the good guys! Mark+ Rest eternal grant to Don, O Lord; And let light perpetual shine upon him. May his soul, and the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. - Posted by: Rev. • To the McInnes Family.... Our deepest sympathy on the passing of Don. My mother, Donna, grew up with Don, Elaine and Julia Ann and though they did not socialize frequently, Donna has fond memories of parties they hosted and or attended together and catching up with Don, their "little visits" as she calls them, over the more recent years. I simply remember Don at LOTW, entertaining, out in his beautiful boat, always having a moment to natter and really enjoying himself. He was such a character and he will be greatly missed by many. Again, from my family to yours, our deepest sympathy. - Posted by: Sidney Macaw (family friend) on: Oct 02, 2021
