He was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Antonia (Nina) Di Lazzaro; his parents, Giovanni and Elvira Di Lazzaro; his brothers, Pino and Nello Di Lazzaro; his father and mother-in-law, Pietro and Enrica Mardero; his sisters-in-law, Elisa Mardero Martignoni, Ada Mardero Copetti, Orsolina Mardero and Arpalice Di Lazzaro; his brother-in-law, Bepi Mardero; and his granddaughter, Laura Di Lazzaro.
Luigi was born on January 22, 1928 in Rivarotta (Rivignano Teor), Italy and immigrated to Winnipeg in 1956 with his cousin Vittorio Di Lazzaro. One of the many people he met in Winnipeg was Bepi Mardero. Bepi told Luigi about his sister Antonia who was living back in Italy. Luigi was intrigued and started to correspond with Antonia. The two decided they would be a good match. In July 1958, Antonia arrived in Winnipeg and the two were married a month later. Their daughter Fernanda was born a year later followed by Robert in 1962. Luigi worked a variety of jobs before finding his profession as a Sheet Metal Worker. He would delight in pointing out the many buildings that he helped build in Winnipeg. Luigi loved the cottage that he and Nina built at Valhalla Beach, where he loved to fish, hunt, garden, and visit with family and friends. He was especially proud of his award-winning tomatoes. His homemade sausages were a family favourite. Luigi loved his children and his grandchildren were his pride and joy. He was so happy to meet his great-granddaughter Gia who was born this past March. He would smile from ear to ear when he would see her.

Dearest Fernanda, Robert and families, I was so sorry to hear of your dear father's passing. As a child, I remember your Dad being a gentle giant - tall and strong, but quiet and gentle in nature. I have such fond memories of both your parents. I remember so many get togethers in those early days when your parents and my Dad were new arrivals to Canada. My parents were their best man and matron of honor at their wedding and I have a photo which I love, which was taken at your parents' wedding where I am running after my Dad. Losing a parent is always so difficult but especially when it's your last surviving parent. May your wonderful memories give you solace during this difficult time. My condolences and deepest sympathy. - Posted by: Lucia Mauro (family friend) on: Oct 27, 2021
