BERTIE JOHN MARKS
January 2, 1962 – October 26, 2021
The hockey world has just lost its biggest fan.
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our fearless leader, our best friend, The Big Dog, Bertie John Marks.
Bert was raised in a military family and moved to Winnipeg in 1989 to pursue a passion in aviation, working at the Esso Avitat at the Winnipeg Airport. Never one to sit idle, Bert moonlighted as a truck driver for Co-Op and Arnold Bros. His hard work and dedication paid off when he took over ownership of the Avitat, turned Central Aviation in 2008, having great success until retirement in 2017. Even after retirement, Bert continued to work for his old business hauling snow, just so he could play with equipment and drive a truck.
Bert had many hobbies that kept him busy. He was an amazing hockey player, who would rather get the assist than the goal. He played countless rounds of golf at Rossmere, where he got to cruise around in a custom Boston Bruins golf cart. His car collection was one for the books and he loved to be active in any way possible.
Bert's first love was always the Bruins and a lifelong dream came true for him the day he met his idol, #4 Bobby Orr. Even with a heart full of black and yellow, he had some room left for our Winnipeg Jets. One of the highlights of his life was getting to travel with the Jets on a three-game road trip to California in January 2018.
Those who knew him, knew that if you did right by him, there is nothing he wouldn't do for you. Bert cherished the many friendships made both at work and at play. It would be impossible to mention you all, but know that he loved you.
Bert leaves behind his wife D'Arcy; his daughters, Katie (Dennis) and Stephanie; stepdaughter Holly; sister Debi (Doug) and mother Margaret. He also leaves his sister-in-law Erin; brother-in-law Doug; father-in-law Ed and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thank-you to all of the wonderful staff at Palliative Care and Riverview Health Centre for their incredible compassionate care.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to KidSport Canada or CancerCare Manitoba.
There won't be a day that goes by that we wont be thinking of you, missing you and wishing you were still here.
Cremation has taken place and no service will be held.
Love you forever, ee aw eeh.

So sad to hear about Bert. On behalf of the Jackhammer Hockey Team we want to pass on our condolences. If Bert was in the line up we always thought we would win. We could count on Bert for a Hat every game. He was so fun to be around and yes he would pass before shoot. He did pass to me many times when he could of scored. We will miss you...Lorne (Lorney), Fred (Freddie) and all the rest of the team. - Posted by: Lorne Locken (Hockey teamate) on: Nov 30, 2021

Very saddened to hear about this. I like Bert am a true Bruins fan. I bought Bert's 79 GMC shortbox 4x4 back in the 80s. Great guy great sense of humour, we had some laughs when I was posted in Portage. - Posted by: Blake Thomson (Friend) on: Nov 08, 2021

D'Arcy, Carol and I were saddened to hear of Bert's passing. He was always interesting to talk to about his cars. I remember him clearing our driveway one winter day when my snowblower wouldn't start. I also witnessed first hand how he helped other neighbours when they needed a hand. Definitely one of the good guys. Carol and Jim Cook - neighbours - Posted by: Jim and Carol Cook (neighbour) on: Nov 07, 2021

Hi to Bert’s family. None of you know me but I’m one of the fortunate (like Larry Partap) who got the privilege of knowing a great guy like Bert. I looked after his new golf cart making sure the battery levels we’re up to snuff etc. COULD’T MEET A NICER GUY! Whether playing golf against him and Neil in men’s league or, finding out from the beer cart girl the the guy on the other fairway bought the group a beer. That was Bert. This really bummed me out. Thank you Bert for coming to Rossmere. Thoughts to the family for sure. - Posted by: Doug McEwen (Friend) on: Nov 06, 2021

D'Arcy and family our thoughts and prayers are with you all during this difficult time. May Bert's precious memories be a blessing. My pal, our 5-some (John, Neil, Weldon) played 100s of rounds at Rossmere Golf Club over the years. What wonderful times we had together - the laughter, and lively discussions about golf, hockey, and social issues. The friends you invited at Rossmere were a treat to play with - demonstrating your personality, integrity, and friendship values. You brought out the best in all of us. Blessings and Peace. - Posted by: Larry & Shirley Partap (Friends) on: Nov 01, 2021

D'Arcy and family, my heart hurts deeply for you. I am so sorry for your loss. Bert was a one of a kind guy and the world is not as bright as it used to be. I will cherish the many memories I have of him. Playing cards and participating in the many Avitat events. We were all family. Big hugs to all of you! 🍁 Dearest Debi, I am very saddened to hear of Bert's passing. It feels like it wasn't that long ago we reminised at Jo- Ann & Bill's home. It was so great to visit with you & Doug. I was so happy to see Bert, he had not changed at all, look great! I know you were both very close growing up, he was like a brother to me. I have fond memories of hanging out at the house, practically living with your family. I shall think of Bert often with cheerfulness for a life well lived. Proud to call him Friend. 🌻 My thoughts and love are with you my friend Debi.💖 Sheila - Posted by: Sheila (Mc Dermid) Mellen (Family Friend) on: Nov 01, 2021

I will remember Bert as a genuine and humble individual who always had kind words. He always gave the benefit of the doubt and never judged anyone. Bert was a very generous man and at times you had to sneak in your turn to buy a refreshment. I won't forget his laughter and smile even after a bad golf shot but a bigger smile when he hit a good one. D'Arcy and family I cannot imagine how you must feel to have lost him. He was taken way too soon and will be missed greatly by all that knew him. RIP buddy and find a nice course so we can play. - Posted by: David Labram (Friend ) on: Oct 31, 2021

DArcy, our sincere condolences to you, the girls and the entire family. I feel very fortunate to have known Bert for the past 20 plus years. Bert was such a kind, generous person! He never said a bad word about anyone, and nobody ever said a bad word about him. I always enjoyed talking sports with him and I loved playing golf and hockey with him. I looked so forward to every game we played. He was just so easy to know and hang out with. We will miss him a lot. Ken (Bucky) Sarahs - Posted by: Ken Sarahs (Bucky) (Friend) on: Oct 31, 2021

D’Arcy, Katie, Stef and all of the family…Randy and I are thinking of you all at this most unbelievably sad time. You know how much we loved Bert, and how close he and Randy were…Randy has cried so much he has worn out his eyes… The tribute you wrote is so true….Bert was a self made man, something that we deeply respected. At his core, Bert was a man of ethics and integrity that guided his life. Sharing one of my favorite poems…They say when someone dies, they turn into stars in the midnight sky, and the summer rains are their lullaby for the ones they loved and have bid goodbye…. Om Amideva Hrih Bert. You are in our hearts forever. - Posted by: Randy and Marina James (Friends) on: Oct 31, 2021

From Ramona, Mitchell and me our heartfelt condolences for your loss. Over the years of playing with Bert I got to know him as not just as a great player - best I ever got to play with - but as an even greater person. I loved knowing that if I was playing hockey or golf with him it would be a laugh as he was a funny, funny guy. He made playing what it is supposed to be - fun. I also appreciated how he checked in on Ramona these past few years as she was struggling with medical problems. He always asked how she was and always told me to give her a hug. That little gesture helped me immensely because of the care and truthfulness behind it and of Bert. The measure of a man is what he leaves those left behind and he left us so much to remember and appreciate. I am thankful for him and what he shared with us - thank you for all of it Bert - Newf (Des) - Posted by: Des Raymond (Friend) on: Oct 30, 2021

Our heartfelt condolences for your loss. If I was to tell as story which there is a few I guess it would have to be our Vegas hockey trip. Bert knew I didn't like to gamble but got me up to the blackjack table with everyone just for the free drinks and showed me how to play (I sweating playing $50 lol). After that a night of shenanigans began and ended with me going to bed earlier and being woken up being dragged out of my bed by the ankles and hearing no sleep tonight... Looking up and seeing Bert's big huge grin. He was a helluva a guy and will be greatly missed. Will think of you Bert and your family often. My heart felt condolences to D’Arcy and family for your loss. Bert will be truly missed, from first time I met you at those Weds skates at Sargent Park years ago, to the scrimmages at Keith Bodley, to last seeing you in August at Carman GC. Bert was an exceptional person to hang out with and be around. You will be missed so very much. Bubba… - Posted by: Jim Hallock (Friend ) on: Oct 30, 2021
