ALAN (AL) LEE NELSON
January 8, 1933 - October 25, 2021

It is with deep sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of the most extraordinary man we knew. With his loving family by his side, Al flew off to greener pastures on October 25, 2021 at St Boniface Hospital, at the age of 88 years.
Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife 67 years, Clarice; children, Eileen Elliott (David), Gary (Sharon), Sandra (Wayne Smith) and sister Susan; eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
He is predeceased by his daughter Donna; brother Mel and parents, Harold and Elsie.
A celebration of Al's life will occur later in the spring of 2022.
Dad was a man of many talents. He attained his pilot's licence at age 17 and soared through his life from there. He was a very intelligent man, who was at ease conversing and could contribute to any discussion. He could and did do anything he set his mind to. He was an arctic-exploring bush pilot, who walked away from two crashes, once putting out a fire on his float plane, while taxiing to the shore of an isolated lake. No problem for dad, he then repaired the burnt wing with a tablecloth from a trapper's cabin and later flew the plane out.
Dad was a visionary, a well-respected artist, photographer, historian, musician, aircraft restorer and engineer, mechanic, writer, storyteller, who was fluent in several languages. He loved family moments, especially travelling and camping. Dad's sense of humour was legendary, his jokes and pranks have reached people in all corners of the earth! Although dad excelled in so many aspects of life, he was a humble and compassionate man. When travelling, he would prefer to befriend the locals, learn their language, become ingrained in their culture and community, rather then hanging with the tourists.
We wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Anthony Batad and the staff on E5 at St. Boniface Hospital, who showed us so much compassion in dad's final days.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to the place near and dear to dad's heart, the Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada.

Condolences can be left on the online guestbook at www.neilbardalinc.com.

  • We (Jim McBride) and I want to extend our condolences for the passing of Al. He was a cherished friend and colleague of my father Jim. Many incredible memories were shared together. - Posted by: Patti McBride (Friend ) on: Nov 13, 2021

  • Our condolences and deepest sympathy from the Hawes family. Many memories, and very fond memories such as attending Heli Expo in the 70's in California and going to Disneyland with you all. Al and my father worked at Transair (Midwest) at that time. Such a nice person and glad to have had the opportunity to learn from and know such a creative person. I remember when he designed our first logo for our Helicopter company. - Posted by: Brian Hawes (Friend) on: Nov 04, 2021

  • Family condolences from the Burton's to the Nelson's. We were saddened to read of the passing of your husband, dad and grandfather. He will always be Mr. Nelson to me, I just can not call him Al! We, as a family have wonderful memories living across the street from your family on Freemont Bay! He was always quick to help out if we ever needed it, whether it was by my parents or Janet and I if our parents were away on vacation or just out!! He sold Grant and I your beloved Cressida for a song, when we needed a second vehicle. He had all the bells and whistles in that car and everything was wired for everything. We loved that car as much as he did! We take comfort in the fact he is enjoying a drink and talking with my dad about the good ol' days on Freemont Bay. Sending huge hugs from our family to yours. - Posted by: Sandy Lethbridge (Neighbour from Freemont Baay) on: Nov 02, 2021

  • Clarice and Family, our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. It was a pleasure knowing Al. We enjoyed his company and many stories that he shared around the dinner table about his adventures as a pilot. He was a kind man with a great sense of humour. May fond memories of Al bring you and your family peace and comfort with time. Lexie, Darrell and Keenan - Posted by: Lexie Fahey (Friend) on: Nov 02, 2021
