MICHAEL WILLIAM GEHLEN

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Michael William Gehlen, on October 29, 2021, at St. Boniface Hospital.
Mike will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 55 years, Rose; daughters, Nancy (Anthony) and Patricia (Clayton); grandchildren, Maximus, Alexander, Cassidy and Jake; sister Katherine Denys; nieces, nephews and countless friends and teammates. He was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Agnes, and his treasured brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Flo.
Mike grew up in Portage La Prairie, which he always held close to his heart, and moved to Winnipeg after graduating from high school. While working at St. Boniface Hospital, Mike completed his Certified Management Accountant designation. He then continued to take on increasingly senior roles in the health care finance field, retiring from the role of Chief Financial Officer of Misericordia Health Centre. Mike met the love of his life, Rose, in Winnipeg and they were married on October 29, 1966. Mike was devoted to his family and was the biggest fan of his children and grandchildren in whatever they did. Mike loved sports, standing behind the Bombers and the Jets through thick and thin. He spent many hours playing, coaching, and watching sports and embodied the spirit of "for the love of the game" right until his final days. He also loved telling jokes and sharing a laugh, often while enjoying a "rumski". He was an incredibly patient, positive person who lived life to its fullest and appreciated the small things. He made strong friendships wherever he went and left an immeasurable footprint on everyone who had the blessing to spend time with him.
The family would like to thank the caring staff at the St. Boniface Palliative Care ward.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Misericordia Health Centre Foundation.
A Celebration of Life will be held on November 23, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. at Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home and streamed live. Proof of vaccination will be required.

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • Mike Gehlen was a good man. I have fond memories of working with Mike at the Misericordia Health Centre, especially as part of the Senior Management Team. I very well remember Mike’s help in keeping our School of Nursing budget always in black. He was very friendly, easy to work with, humorous, and an excellent money manager; overall, a good person. He will be missed. May he Rest In Peace. My heartfelt condolences to Rose and the Family. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers as you grieve your tremendous loss. - Posted by: Peri Venkatesh (Co-worker) on: Nov 24, 2021

  • As the Director at Villa Rosa, I worked with Mike in his capacity of CFO at the Misericordia. After he retired, he still sat on the Villa Rosa Corporation and I remember him missing a few meetings because he forgot and was out playing baseball! He was a lovely, gentle man. - Posted by: Kathy Strachan (Colleague) on: Nov 07, 2021

  • Rose and family: Mavis and I were so sorry to hear Mike had passed away. He was such a wonderful fellow, a compassionate person, always friendly, and certainly had a great sense of humour. In slo-pitch mike was a great team player. You will no doubt miss him, but so will I. Mavis joins me in offering condolences at this sad time. - Posted by: Will Tishinski (friend) on: Nov 07, 2021

  • Michael will be missed so much by all those who played ball with him and against him. I played with him on the Winnipeg South and Tri-Clad slopitch teams for many years. He definitely was one of my favourites! He was very kind, sensitive and soft-spoken, always seeing the positive in everything. We all have so many great memories of all our tournaments, both on and off the field! My thoughts are with you, Rose and family at this difficult time.
