EDITH IRENE SMITH
(nee NICHOLS)
Edith was born on October 6, 1927 in Winnipeg, and moved with her family to live in Steep Rock, Manitoba in 1929. In 1949, at the age of 21 she married her childhood sweetheart James (Jim) Smith and they settled in Fort Whyte where they raised their children and remained happily married for over 42 years until Jim's passing in 1991.
In 1968, Edith began her employment at Pizza Place Family Restaurants. She remained with Pizza Place for the remainder of her career, rising to the position of District Manager, and retired shortly after Jim's passing. She greatly valued the many friends she made over her years working at Pizza Place as well as her relationships with many regular customers.
Edith very much enjoyed travelling. Her adventures included many trips to Nevada with her daughters and friends, Scandinavia with her husband Jim, and in later years Portugal, as well as the Okavango Delta in Botswana and Victoria Falls in Zambia with her son. At home, Edith kept active with friends by playing darts, carpet bowling, and attending bingo at the Fort Garry Legion and ANAVETS Rockwood 303. Edith's other hobbies included going on outings with friends and family, gardening, cooking, and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
In her later years Edith resided at the Golden Door Geriatric Centre where her sense of humour and kind nature were appreciated by staff and residents alike.
Edith will be profoundly missed by her children, daughters, Jeanine Smith (Daryl Johnston) and Lori Lucier, son James (Chibuya) Smith, grandchildren, Travis (Kerry), Shawna, Brandi (Kyle), Alexander, Marley and Scarlett, great-grandchildren, Carter and Cora, sister Marie Brickman, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband James, parents, Ralph and Dorothy Nichols, and sister Edna Shiells.
Edith's greatest passion was her family; she cherished her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and we all adored her. She gave freely of herself to ensure we were all content and safe and never asked for anything in return. The joy, laughter, comfort, and compassion she gave so generously will always be dear to our hearts where Edith's memory will endure.
Edith's family would like to thank the staff and management at the Golden Door Geriatric Centre for the outstanding care provided to Edith during her residence there.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 20, 2021 at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. For those who wish to attend the service, please R.S.V.P. to Chapel Lawn between 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Jeanine, Lori, Jim and extended family. We are saddened to hear of you Mother's passing. My memories of her will always be her smile and laughter, she had the best sence of humour. I never saw her in a bad mood, she was always happy. Her life was well lived and her memories will live on with all of us. It must be one heck of a party in heaven. Our love to all of you.
