GEORGE RADLEY

It is with heavy hearts that we announce Dad's passing on December 19, 2021, at the age of 93.
A husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather Dad leaves to mourn his wife and life companion of 69 years Gwenneth; sons, Donald, Scott (Jocelyne) and Paul (Monica); grandchildren, Christopher (Leah), Tyler (Maria), Erik (Nathalie), Glenn (Sage), Braden (Darci), Madeleine (Brayden), Cameron, Zachary; great-grandson Taylor, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Dad was predeceased by his father Herbert, mother Lavina, sisters, Irene, Dorothy, Ruth and brothers, Walter and John.
Growing up in St. James, Dad met the love of his life Gwenneth in 1945 at St. James Collegiate. Gwen and George were married May 17, 1952, and shortly thereafter would move to Avondale Rd. in St. Vital where they lived for some 50 plus years.
Dad worked at the Manitoba Telephone System for 41 years, starting as an office boy in 1946 and retired as Administration Manager (Eastern Region) in 1987. Dad was the first one we ever saw with a phone mounted in his car! He also worked in consort with the Emergency Measures Organization and found himself stranded in Morris, MB during the flood of 1979!
After Dad's retirement in 1987, he and Mom travelled overseas and extensively in Canada and the United States. He also was President of the Life Member Club Chapter 50 of the Telephone Pioneers of America and he and Mom represented at several conventions.
Volunteering and giving back to the community were very important to Dad. He volunteered as a Cub Scout Leader at St. Mary's Rd. United Church for eight years, volunteered at the 1999 Pan Am Games and was the coordinator for Canada of the Talking Book Repair Program from 1999 to 2006.
Music played a large roll in Dad's life as he and Mom were involved in many choirs over the years at the church and beyond. He was also a member of the Pioneer Singers.
Dad was a good husband, good father, and good friend. Family "road trip vacations" to Wisconsin Dells, Jasper, and other locations as we dragged the tent trailer behind the Acadian and three boys fought in the backseat……. He raised his family well and was always there when we needed him. He was very proud of his family, and we were proud of him.
A big thanks to staff of 4 North at the Victoria Hospital for looking after Dad in his final days.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Movement Centre of Manitoba.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service for Dad will be held in the spring when all life renews.

  • My warmest condolences to all my family. I have such fond memories of my Uncle George. One especially was when uncle George and Auntie Gwen took me to my dad's favourite restaurant when I was in Winnipeg for a swim meet. We just got to hang out and chat and catch up on life, I will always cherish that! Sending warmest hugs and lots of love Brenda ❤️ - Posted by: Brenda Scott (Radley) (Niece) on: Dec 24, 2021
